Single vs Double Optin? (legal, sabotage)

I've always been of the mindset to go double-optin on my lists, but met up with a consultant the other day to look at one of my projects. Based on the flighty & newb-ish nature of my audience he recommended going single optin.

I'm aware of how that could put a list in jeopardy over at places like aweber, etc if there are too many spam complaints, but seeing if you guys know of any other legal issues which could come out of it.

example - I'm in a pretty competitive market. Could a competitor in theory drop a bunch of spam honeypot emails in my autoresponder to set me up for problems? There are a bunch of guys out there running single-optin but just didn't know if they were taking on a lot of risk or if double-optin is just playing it extra safe.

Consultant I'm talked with runs a mountain of traffic, but he is from outside the US so just wondering...

Aweber gives you like 3+ chances to fix any issues you have with too many spam complaints anyway. If competitor dropped a bunch of spam emails in there, Aweber should be able to figure that out.

Single opt-in works well as long as you remind your subscribers how they opted-in. Let them know who you are again, where they opted-in, and that way they won't think you scraped their email and are sending them spam. After all, even people that double opt-in can complain of spam -- they just forget who you are.
