Sitemaps and Word Press

I am using a plugin to generate a sitemap for WP. I also want a sitemap.xml file to submit to Google Webmaster Tools. Should I just make a sitemap.xml file and just put "website.com/sitemap" in it, or should I include the main directory and index.php as well?

Maybe I am way off and doing it wrong, so if so, please explain how I should go about this. Thank you.

Also, do I even need the sitemap plugin? I was thinking I would be fine with just the xml file, but I hear spiders love a sitemap page?

I've used this VIGOS Gsitemap - Free Google Sitemap Generator for Windows for a couple years now and it works great. It gathers the page URLs, makes the sitemap and submits it for you. All you have to do is upload the .xml file to your server before you mash the submit button in the program.

I can't speak on the sitemap plugin, I've never used it.

If you decide to use gsitemap, feel free to PM me. It's not real intuitive. It's easy to use, once you figure out how it works, though.
