I only recently started using wordpress. And I don't really know what I'm doing for the most part. I decided to go ahead and use it on my homepage dimipapa.com since It's just easier to post blurbs that way. I would like to learn how to totally do this stuff myself as I used to be an html guy but I don't know when I'll be able to learn it. But basically can I make significant changes with these wordpress editor in the dashboard. Is it really open for every theme or just the main theme? I've only even attempt tinkering with it with the default theme.

No- the editor allows you to manipulate content for the most part, unless you are using a theme like Atahualpa that allows certain access to editor "wizards" to tweak the actual Theme and CSS directly.

Otherwise I believe you have to hack the core theme files directly, and you better brush up on your PHP first- HTML experience ain't gonna help you much- and if you break something, cya.

Someone correct me if I'm wrongo- I'm no WP gooroo. And this should prolly be in the design/dev forum too, mate ;)

If you set your permissions for your theme files to writeable, you can then edit them through the backend admin area. I usually just edit the fees directly though by logging in via an FTP client
