Got an injection of cortisone into my spine today.
American Pain and Wellness

to quote the nurse after the procedure
We had to go through muscle and tendons to get to the area where we gave the injection so you may feel some discomfort.
discomfort? More like feeling like I've been beaten. I'm on my third Vicodin of the day - I sure hope this settles down and helps cause right now it feels like hell - even after taking vicoden. Thats not a good sign.

Dude I get cortisone injected into my keloids(scars) on my chest and shoulders. Hurts so bad I can hardly stand it sometimes. I couldn't imagine getting it stuck into my spine.

How long does it take you for the pain to subside and the benefits of the injections to kick in? I've been told a couple days probably - I'm honestly considering calling in tomorrow, don't want to though, already behind on a couple projects...

The pain depends. Usually its just 1-3 days then sore for a few days. It takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to get the full effect. I get them for scar reduction though, so it may be dif for you.

man I've had those shots in the back (between the vertebra)...

It actually cured me of my fear of needles... I used to be scared of injections, now I just laugh.

For me it hurt a while (a day or two), but in general it didn't produce anywhere near the pain I was feeling from a motorcycle crash I had a few years ago. So I mainly only felt relief, even though I knew there was some pain from the shot.

* I think I should also give mad credit to the doc that gave them to me. I'm sure it would have hurt 100x more if he didn't have the magical hand he has.

oh and I was heavily medicated during that time... so my perception may have been off. It may have taken longer for the shot's pain to go away.

I had cortisone in my foot for plantar fasciitis and the pain was worse for about 2 days, and then gradually the pain went away entirely, and my plantar fasciitis has been cured for about 10 months now. I wish I'd had the shot long ago.

Eww..that sucks.
Never had to take these injections and I hope I never will.

Hey Matt,

I had an epidural cortisone shot about 2 years ago to help me heal some disc issues. They gave me a few small shots to numb the muscles then used the big needle with the revolving xray machine to feed the cortisone into the epidural space. I only felt a lot of pressure, as they were pushing the needle to the right spot, but no pain really. Immediately upon injecting the cortisone all my pain was numbed out.

Are you sure they got it in the right place? I didn't have to take any pain meds at all afterwards, not even ibuprofen. I hope things get better for you.

Thanks turbo - posted this mainly because you asked about it the other day.
That and I felt like venting.

You know I gotta plug it: Once your back feels even the tiniest bit better from the shot get on that fucking treadmill and start walking! Walk for at least an hour everyday.

For those of you that have turbostation on your twitter, you know that I made an announcement yesterday that I have been completely free of back pain for almost 6 weeks now. (first consecutive pain free in years). If you think I'm full of it, you can talk to Eli. His roomate had chronic back pain, got on the treadmill, walks an hour everyday and he hasn't had back pain pretty much since he started. The results vary (depending on the injury) from about 60%-100% (according to the research out there) but hell, isn't a 60% pain reduction worth it???

Sorry...part of my Evangelical Walking- had to get the word out! :D

That's true.. there was a big ad campaign here in Australia that I vaguely remember from ages ago that basically said don't lie down and rest if you have back pain, get out there and be active and it will help it.

Yeah the doc said they got it in the right spot and the pressure felt like it was where it needed to be. They told me it varys person to person on how long it takes to "kick in" - guess I'm one of the ones it takes a few days. I went into work today and ended up back at home a couple hours later...

Yeah - my "turbostation" is in the process of being pieced together - waiting mainly on a friend of mine to get me the free treadmill he's (supposedly) got for me. Definitly going to start walking as soon as the pain drops - actually the only thing that seems to help my pain right now lower is either walking or a hot shower.

Chronic pain sucks, good luck Matt. About 6 months ago I got drunk at an X-mas party and fell down a flight of stairs. Yes, yes..I know, my fault BUT, ever since then, my ribcage on the side I landed on has been hurting like hell. Been to the doctor a few times, and all they tell me everytime is "We don't know what's causing the pain, here take these pills". It's either a torn muscle or rib out of alignment. I don't know, but it hurts constantly.

Anyway, it's frustrating to say the least. Hope you feel better soon. :)

The worst time to do that is when you're drunk, your muscles are relaxed and cant protect you for shit. Be thankful you're alive and live with the rib pain!

Yeah that "we're not sure whats wrong but here take these pills" rotuine is annoying at first and builds into something downright scary as time goes on and multiple doc's tell you the same thing.

I'm seriously pissed right now - this was supposed to HELP and it's not so far, think half the problem is that I was expecting relief but instead I got increased pain. Have been taking 3-4 vicoden a week as needed - on my 4th today and I still feel like shit - if I'm not feeling better in the AM I'm headed to the doc for something stronger.

You've gotten MRIs and such right? I mean we're not talking about a tumor or anything right??? (Someone needs to go ahead and do Arnold right about now)

Yep - MRI showed two slightly herniated discs in my upper back. (C 6&7 I think) that are putting pressure on my spine.
