South America Housing Market?

Hi, I'm in the process of converting my paper to real stuff, and one thing I would like to do is buy a home.
But my country (Netherlands) has a housing bubble so that's not an attractive option.
I want to buy good value and preferably something under $50K.

This would be an example of the sort of market that I'm looking for...
“Another reason to buy a house in Fez is because it’s one of the few cities in the world where it’s possible to own a magnificent traditional house for the price of a modest car.”
But instead of Morocco (Fez is in Morocco) I'd prefer South America or another country/continent where it's pleasant to live.

Anyone can point me in the right direction? With that I mean good sites about the subjects, data, contacts, suggestions, whatever helps...

I want to get a better picture of all the good attractive options available when buying a house in the world market.

P.S. for anyone else interested, here is a world map that shows the price of the housing stock of a territory, in purchasing power parity:

Interesting. I'm trying to make sense of that map you linked.

Where I live in Southeast Asia a decent house can be bought for the price of a nice car. But that's not a good thing. It's because taxes are so high on cars that they cost 2X to 3X what they cost in the U.S. So that metric isn't necessarily a useful one.

I recommend you get as much productive farmland as you can with that house purchase. It'll come in very handy in the not so distant future.

Netherlands is a good bubble?

Netherlands == gov. sponsored housing market + suicidal mortage population + gov./bank debt of 200% of GDP...

It's just a matter of time. Right now you can go across the border to Germany and buy a home for half the price, but I don't want a home there.

My 1 cent tip.
When purchasing a house don't care only about price. Sure, there are very cheap areas in south America now but this is not always a good element for an investment.
Look at the big image: international airports at max 50 km, good railways and roads, life quality level....
You don't want to buy a 50K$ house and find shitty neighbors at your door.

I have heard good things about chile, one blog in particular is always raving about it Sovereign Man: Finance, lifestyle design, Offshore Business and Expat news

Ecuador is very tropical, lots of biodiversity, and cheap

Argentinas economy hasnt been doing well but you have the cultural hotspot of buenos aires (tim ferriss talks about this city a lot) plus theres patagonia that my wife is always begging me to see

uruguays banking and tax laws are supposed to be very favorable. also known as the europe of south america

i went to costa rica for a few weeks about 4 months ago and traveled around the country. it was a very nice country with a lot going for it. dont forget central america, especially CR and panama

but you could look at confusing maps and drown yourself in statistics all day.

what you really have to do is take a few months off, hit the ground, and live in these places for some time and making a decision after that shouldnt be hard at all

Why not Fez? Beautiful architecture. Reminds me of the 1001 nights. You could have a nice harem in there. Plus you're in NL, only like 3 hours flight to Fez, versus like 10+ hours to South America.
