Spamming cell phones?

Every now and then I get a text message spam on my cell phone. Today I got one promoting best2k8.com which just forwards to a zip submit offer. Probably one of you fuckers from WF lol. I don't know crap about sending text messages to cell phones but I'm sure it can be automated and it can't be that expensive. Anyone making money spamming cell phones? I guess it's probably "illegal" per can-spam so it's just like email spam?

Here's an idea: setup a free SMS site (I have no experience with this) and have it save all the phone numbers submitted. Then spam the numbers a few weeks or months later. You could avoid legal problems by having a TOS saying this might happen.

I was an investor in a startup company that did cellphone promo for local bars / clubs. They made people sign papers to signup for the service. I think there are some huge fines involved that are pretty easily enforced if you break the opt in law

Is that for all SMS, or just those that tack on stuff to your bill (ie short codes)?
