I don't know much php or html and was looking to start out buying landing pages. My question is, when you get a landing page made, do you edit the pages to split test or ask for multiple copies with minor changes? I see under the buy and sell section people raving about the landing pages they outsourced, but are these pages usually good out of the box or do they need to be tweaked to split test?

Geezer, you have 3 types of test:

  1. A/B test - Tests 2 completely seperate URLS.
  2. Multivariate Test - Test same URL but has variable 'sections', such as a headline, image etc. You wrap the sections to be varied in little bits of Javascript code.
  3. Advanced A/B test - Cross between the above two. You basically set up as per a M/V test but frig the code. This means you can test URLS A/B/C/D/E etc etc.

Roughly, most tests require a bit of javascript at the top ( control script ), and a bit at the bottom (tracking script). You get all this code by setting up a Website optimizer account and running through the wizards. Its not too difficult.
I won't go any more detailed, but you get the idea. Read the google documentation for more info

Nothing is good out of the box, there is always room for optimization. If a page is making you 200%, try to get it to 250. If you're driving traffic to a single LP you are losing money.
