So I found 2 professional sports teams EMDs that are still available surprisingly. One has 40k exact searches a month and the other one has 30k.

I bought them a minute ago but now I'm really not sure if I should invest time/money developing them... the main reason being the fact that the #1 result for these 2 keywords (the team names) are the official team websites, which I figure 90%+ of the traffic will go. The only way I could seriously bank from this is if somehow I'm able to outrank the official websites, which have millions of highly relevant backlinks. The 2nd result is the Wikipedia article for the team. I don't think I could make any good money being #3 or below... Do you think it's possible to outrank both the official website AND the wikipedia article with an EMD? And how would you monetize these websites? Adsense? Affiliate banners for the teams' gear (jerseys, caps, etc...)?

Tits for tips...

not worth it if the names are trademarked (and that is usually the reason why most of these domains are still available).

it's the city + team name... I don't know if that is a trademark issue? Plus I've seen tons of "fan sites" using EMDs...

Sports isn't a notably lucrative niche. I'd look up what you need to classify it as a fan site to avoid legal problems, only after you plan a way to monetize it.

I happen to like these 2 teams so I wouldn't mind creating/animating a fan forum on these 2 sites. Now, I've been googling this thing for the past hour and I can't figure out if I'm allowed to use the exact names of the teams. I found an article on SitePoint saying that it's fine to use a domain like yankeesfanclub.com or iloveredsox.com but they don't say anything about the exact team name used by itself.

Anyone has some experience on the legal side of things here?

I never buy .infos, it's actually the .coms with a dash between city and team name (e.g. miami-heat.com)

these are 2 new franchises in the sport that recently joined the big league (in the past 2 years). They don't have a massive fan base as of yet but it can only grow now they made it to the top. 40k exact matches is a great number in my books.

Anyhow, YuckyStuff just gave me a cold shower with his comment... I think I'll leave them aside for now.

Any reason as to why sports sites a difficult to monetize? I don't know why they would be. I ask because I'm in the process of building 3 sports blogs, but it's teams I love and I'll truly enjoy blogging on them. Still need to cash out though.... knawmean?

I vote not worth the hassle. Why put so much time and effort into sites when you could potentially get a C&D that actually has some legal merit to it and have all your hard work be for nothing? The more money you make from your site the more exposure it will have and the more likelihood the team owners will take notice. So your risk actually increases in line with your asset growth which isn't a good thing in terms of scalability. Sure, it might not happen, but I personally wouldn't risk it - registering team name domains borders on trademark issues for sure.

For anyone that's interested, here's the answer I got from an Attorney specialized in Internet & Intellectual Property (regarding my 2 EMDs):

"yes, the team could sue you and make you give them the domain and potentially pay damages and attorney fees."

Let's just say I quickly cleared those domains out of my shopping cart :)

They are difficult to monetize because they're hard to get traffic to (hard to outrank Wikipedia, official sites, news sites etc., and the affiliate offers in the sports niche convert for shit and payout for shit.
Oh OK, I see. Thanks man. I think I can atleast front page mine, pretty sure actually and that hould be enough because of the amazing search volume. Atleast I hope so....

If your best idea in 2011 was the best idea in 1995, you best go kill yourself. Plus, a dumb ass like yourself wouldn't have an attorney to contact about this shit in the first place. If you're going to pose, at least make it semi-believable. BTW asshole, a - isn't an EMD. With that line of retarded thinking, m-i-a-m-i-h-e-a-t.com is an EMD.
