I remember reading Chad (CDF Networks) tweet about converting to a standing-up desk and I think he liked it.

Anybody else convert to a standing desk? Good decision? Bad decision?

If I end up trying it out I'll post results.

I've tried everything. Couldn't ever get used to any "non-traditional" setups. For me the easiest/best/only solution is to simply take a lot of breaks and never work for more than 1-2 hours at a time.

Some of the best advice when it comes to all of that was one that my eye doctor gave me - every 15-20 minutes take 1 minute to look out the window. I changed it to every hour I take a 3-5 minute break and walk out on the terrace/balcony and relax.

Productivity went up a lot.

I know this is in no way related to what you asked, but just offering an alternative.

Yeah, taking frequent short breaks is good for productivity, haven't tried anything as short as 15-20 minutes. I'll give it a shot.

Also the main reason I'm thinking of converting to standing up is the health/posture benefits.

Standing in place for long periods of time is not good for you either, you'll just be trading one problem for another.

The best solution is what bofu said, just take frequent breaks and walk around a bit.

I looked into a walking desk when I was having back problems. I got a proper chair (embody) and I have started to take breaks like others have said. The best type of breaks I have found are to go outside. Go for a short walk, or chill on the porch/hammock, go get a drink.

Just the movement of walking somewhere else helps. I am thinking about working a bit at some local cafes, but I am going to ride my bike to them and back. No car. Going to see how this works out over the summer.

^^ this.

Really, you just need to focus on Anything else in the distance besides the monitor.

Did realise until I read that, but I've been doing that for a while now and my eyes feel better. Get more done too.

Also on the topic of productivity through less eye strain (especially at night) this is the single best thing I ever installed.

I tried a DIY version a while ago. Stacked a load of stuff under a desk so it floated in the air.

It does get to you at first. It's more energy to stand up the whole time, just because you end up moving your whole body more. Which is half the point, of course.

I found I needed a chair in combo though. There are times when it really helps to lean back and think something over.

And eventually the standing naturally phased itself out.

I always stand up and walk around when on the phone though, and sometimes when I'm thinking.

So when I was smoking I was actually doing the best thing for myself taking regular breaks and going outside?

Maybe I will start taking cigarette breaks without the smokes now.

You're right. It's taken your post to make me realise that by not popping out for a fag I don't really have a proper break. Although unlike you, I'm going to take up smoking again. Smoking trumps life yet again. :smokin:
