ATTN, I intend to touch on some spoilers - If you have yet to see the movie I strongly suggest you hit that back button right now unless you really don't mind knowing key parts of the plot.

I just got back from going to see the new Star Trek movie (in Imax)

One word summary? Awesome.

I am impressed with how they touched on the past but yet "wiped the slate" somewhat with the time travel\alternate reality based off of past events angle. With where the franchise sits now they can develop the characters in a totally new way. Right after the movie ended and halfway through the drive home I was pissed off at the way they did it, but the more I thought about how they did it the more it makes sense. Still think that destroying Vulcan\Killing Spock's mom was a bit much personally though.
The "dual" Spock angle is going to be interesting to see play out, really liked how they worked Leonard Nimoy AKA "Spock Prime" into the storyline too.

Oh and something I had to laugh at - Spocks father. The actor that played him did not impress me at all - while trying to look serious he just came off as looking constipated.

The line they used in one of the trailers seems to sum it up rather well.

"This isn't your fathers star trek"

Anyone else seen it yet? Did you like it?

I haven't seen it yet. All of the cams are crap from what I can tell, and I hate going to the theater. It's like being raped at a group peepshow.

Thanks for the spoilers. I would watch this even if people think it is shite, Sci-Fi fans can't be choosy with Hollywood more interested in producing cow patties for the Ben and Jerry fatties.

I downloaded one of the Cam's when I got home to re-watch a couple key scenes that I enjoyed (Kobayashi Maru scene was funny as hell) it's cut off a bit but the sound\video is actually pretty decent for a cam. Links below if you want to give it a shot.

I thought it was totally awesome. I damn near cried at the end when Nimoy did the "Space. The Final Frontier.." thing.

PS - I think the ending would have been EPIC if Shatner, Nimoy, and Patrick Stewart would have all taken a line or two.

Stay tuned for Star Trek: The Alternative Generation

I really liked it. I though the casting was spot on.

Sylar is a perfect young Spock.

Uhura is hot.

James Tiberius is an arrogant prick.

Bones, Scotty, Checkov and Sulu all made sense to me.

Good summer action flick.

Now... Let's see if they can do the same thing with TNG!

Saw it last night and I loved it. It was really well done. I wish Simon Pegg had a bit more screen time, because I love him as Scotty. And I am so glad they didn't go back and somehow fix everything at the end.

Hehe - I almost cried there too man. I probably would have stood up and cheered if they had done that shatner\nimoy\stewart ending like you mentioned, holy crap.

I loved it, It was a great movie, the casting was great, the acting, i thought, was really good, the graphics were FUCKING AMAZING, and i loved how they filmed it, ya know with the light reflecting weird, and all that, (you know what im talking if you saw it) and the Space Jump was BADASS, i love how the red shirt was killed because he was sucked over the side. i was laughing soooo hard and people were staring at me. Im going to go see it again the next couple of days. the end damn near made me cry.

I laughed at the guy dying too, got some weird looks. Going to watch it again sometime this week also. With the exception of a couple randoms that I went to that I'd already seen just to hangout with friends this will be the first time I've seen a movie more than once in a week since star wars episode II.

I agree - it was absolutely, unrelentingly awesomeness in a bottle.

I was totally worried it would suck. I didn't want the franchise to turn into a lame action series, but they develop the characters really well - and I love how Kirk and Spock hate each other initially and Kirk has major issues about his dad, that all played out in a realistic way. They kept the story grounded with the characters each having a nice back story.

This movie was like Wrath of Khan in a lot of ways - single crazy villain, with most of the story focused on getting that villain (and is Eric Bana totally unrecognizable as Nero, or what? He's creepy as fuck in this movie.) Great action sequences, lots of fun peeks into what Starfleet Academy is like.

Oh, and I loved the guy who is playing Bones now. Hilarious and spot on.

And I liked how they brought in Captain Pike in an important role - the actor who plays him is very good.

Ya ditto,

I saw the movie last night, and LOVED it. The guy who played the new spock was right on! Great acting, and with the success of the movie, I can see some other charachters making there appearance in the next one, and there IS going to be another one. J J Abrams created it specificly to create more!

Probably the best Star Trek movie.

One thing though, I did not like how they put Spock and Uhura as having a relationship. It destroyed the character of Spock in the traditional sense.

I would love to see Shatner in the movies again. He's the classic captain, in the very first Star Trek episodes I watched when I was like 8 years old. (I didn't like the way he died in the previous Star Trek, it wasn't like him to get emotionally persuaded by Patrick like that)

As much as Shatner is THE captain I hope they don't bring him back. Nimoy\Spock was a stretch in and of itself, if they bring back Kirk they'll mess up the new franchise and probably turn off a bunch of new fans which will in the long run mean less revenue and less movies.

That said if they do bring him back I'll probably be in a theater cheering even after what I just said lol.

I think maybe putting Shatner in when Spock did the mind meld on Kirk would have been ok as a flash back.

I think JJ probably though about putting Shatner in but decided against it because of his limelight hugging character.
