I am starting a network of blog sites to push affiliate offers. They are all niche specific. Is there an issue with creating each blog in the format niche.blogname.com rather then buying a domain nicheblogname.com for each?

On the converse is there an advantage to buying a domain for each. Hit me back suckas.

you all rock.

For my ebay affiliate blogs...I just bought a domain name for each and have been using subfolders for the various cities.

Then again I'm probably not the best person to comment as I've not been looking for SE rankings or traffic that way.

I think subdomains will be treated as part of the main domain now instead of their own domain, so if you want each niche to rank on its own it might be better to have a domain for each. Here's what Matt Cutts said:

I'm not quite sure you get what Matt Cutts is saying. He is talking about multiple subdomains for the same domain not being able to show for the same search result. I have no interest in multiple subdomains showing for the same search result as each subdomain would be a different niche.

Then do what you want. You'll save money and it'll be easier to transfer a portion of your niche sites to a different server if they start to get popular enough by using a subdomain, but most people (depending on your audience) would probably have a harder time remembering a subdomain address. This obviously doesn't matter if the majority of your traffic is coming via search engines.

@bubbly - all traffic would be from search engines

@emp - Just wouldn't want matt getting wise to some of the shady shit that goes on here :)

I'm by no means an SEO expert but I would think that if you eventually want any chance of really building out and then selling a particular site, having its own domain rather than just a subdomain would be pretty huge. Not sure if that factors in for ya.

Are the niches related? In my experience building out horizontally into related niches, and going all the way -- ie. individual domains and such -- is a very good idea. The beauty of it is that you don't have to build a network right off the bat. Just build a quality site and "spin off" the individual sections that get tons of direct traffic.

Once you have a few winners you can also go vertical, using authority sites to tie things together ("up") or promoting sites unrelated to the content across the network ("down") such as a WP theme site if all of the network sites are built on WP.

All of that would be hard to do using subdomains, but easy to do by building gradually and letting your traffic stats and commissions tell you what to build next.

@Frank - Interesting reply, im starting to consider individual domains for the reason that they can be used for links down the line plus if i want to profit off of selling an individual site i can.

Resale value is another thing worth considering.

Bear in mind also that it's easy to re-incorporate "spin offs" that end up not paying their own rent. If anything that can lead to a traffic driver back to the original site; make a few forum posts or press releases announcing a "merger" or "purchase" of the newer site by the older one, and there you go. It would suck that it didn't work out, but at least there's something salvageable from the process.
