Just saw it a couple of nights ago.

Holy Hell.

I didn't know anything about it. (That's how I like going in to a movie, knowing almost nothing about it, I've had the best movie experiences that way) Ok that's not true. Here's what I knew: It's a musical that's been around for a few years. It had Johhny Depp as Sweeny Todd and it was directed by Tim Burton. Ok ok I knew if Johhny Depp and Tim Burton were collaborating again that it was going to be a little fucked up but I mean it's a musical for christ sakes how fucked up could it be?? and it's called "Sweeny Todd" it sounds like something from a show were some guy would at least once say the line, " here's lookin at you kid" (I know I'm mixing classics)

Just don't take your elderly grandma to this musical.

I agree. This movie is brilliant. I've always loved Tim Burton's
material, but he hasn't put out a film of this caliber for years.

The set design is awesome. It's delicious.

The acting is great. Depp, of course, is wonderful. However,
Bonham Carter could have been put to more use. The other
actors (not to spoil it for anyone) turn in great work, too.

The music... c'mon, it's Stephen Sondheim. It's creative,
macabre and makes you chuckle while sending a chill down
your spine.

The directing is almost perfect. But, full-disclosure: I'm biased
about Burton.

Cinematography is perfect. It's dark and makes you cringe at
what London was like during that era. But, you can't take your
eyes away from the filth and stench. Beautiful.

The singing: The leads (Depp and Bonham Carter) singing is good,
but not great. But, you'll probably find that you don't mind a bit.
The material is so strong, so alluring, that you become immersed
in the experience.

I know I'm gushing. I'm a movie fan. I relish good movies. I was
aghast the entire time. But, I couldn't wipe the grin off my face
while watching it. This film is a treat.

I'd recommend it to anyone who reads WickedFire (it's pretty safe
that the blood, gore and material won't offend any WF members'
sensibilities).

I saw the movie a couple of nights ago. My parents took me to see the live version when I was about 7 or 8 (which explains a lot about me).

The movie is visually awesome and I think Johnny Depp did a pretty good job. Personally, I think Gary Oldman might have done it better, but Depp managed fine. Helena Bonham Carter has a weak voice.

Wow was it gory. Not Braindead/Bad Taste cartoony gory but GORY. Some sick sound effects.

But it lacked the suspense, dread and total malevolence of the original version. The main song "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" is fucking EVIL live and it's only a background instrumental intro piece in the movie.

I think that if you like the movie, you'll really like the live version.

Yeah, I saw this one with my parents on the eve of xmas! Whoops! Great Movie though, but I'm not the biggest fan of musicals...and this was one GOREY PERFORMANCE with Mr. Depp!

By the way, Happy New Years everyone!
