I am certain there are those who will label me a racist, primarily because I am a Republican and Democrats love to yell “racist” if a white person speaks negatively about anything involving a racial component. However, I am not speaking negatively about any race, instead, I am speaking negatively about “teaching” a race or culture to hate.

Despite your political affiliation, one thing that has astonished me about the current election process and should seriously concern you, is the teaching of racial hatred, as demonstrated by Reverend Wright and Father Phleger, that is apparently common in African-American churches throughout the U.S. Obama referred to this as a “cultural” difference; however, hatred is not unique to any one culture and should be strongly condemned and discouraged by every culture.

When I first became aware of this after seeing the objectionable sermons on television, I called a black friend of 30 years (and an Obama supporter) and asked him if he had ever witnessed such a sermon. He stated such sermons were common and that the same thing went on in “white” churches. I told him that while I have not been to every church in America, I have been a Southern Baptist for approximately 20 years and attended about 4 different churches. Before that, I was a Catholic. NEVER did I ever hear ANYTHING like the hate filled sermons preached by Wright or Phleger. The ONLY sermons I ever heard in either church were ones of Christ’s love for ALL people. NO mention of race was ever made. Had it been made, I am certain the congregation would have fired the clergyman or petitioned the bishop for his removal from the church.

There is little wonder that race relations in the U.S. would be very strained when teaching children every Sunday that white people hate blacks and are responsible for all sorts of evils against blacks. How could any child grow up in such an environment and NOT have a strong distrust, fear or hatred of the white race? While the answer seems crystal clear to me, there has been no public outcry about such hate teachings and the news media has been totally silent on this issue. Yet, I have seen repeated broadcasts of Muslims teaching hatred in Mosques or schools to their young, which always causes our public revulsion. I, for one, fail to see the difference between teaching Muslim children to hate or teaching Black children to hate.

While I am certain racial hatred is not taught in every African-American church in America, it is evident that it is taught in many such churches. If we ever hope to repair our race relations in this country, we MUST stop teaching our children to hate especially when such teaching gives the appearance of having the blessings of our religious community.

The question is: Do these churches run AdSense on their websites?

I saw something like this on the BBC the other day. Some British reporter was sent to Harlem to talk with Al Sharpton, a former Black Panters leader, the leader of the Nation of Islam, etc. Their attitudes were appalling, and it explains a lot about our society when these people are 'leaders'.

Or maybe I'm just being intolerant.

EDIT: bb_wolfe has a point.

Predominately black churches (or muslem, mexican, etc) are much smaller than the typical churches I have attended over the years. Because of their size, what they teach tends to fly under the radar whereas the larger churches have no such luck.

I think the biggest thing I see when reading the above is that religion in general is teaching hate more and more these days. This is an awful trend that will spread racism and make people resent religion (which is supposed to be beautiful).

Religion is quickly becoming the root of all evil.

You've almost got it right. Hatred of all kinds is taught in ALL churches. Surprised you didn't notice this during your time as a Catholic or, my goodness, a Southern Baptist.

Since we're outing churches here, I'll do my part in bringing my experiences to the surface.

White southern baptist churches (the dozen or so that I have been to over the years) teach hatred also. Not the racial kind but hatred of sexual preferences & other religions.

They hate fags, lesbos & bi-sexual.
They hate everyone who doesn't believe EXACTLY the way they do. More specifically they teach hatred of 3rd tier christian religions (eg. Mormons, Jehovah's witness, etc) and Jews (though they believe we have to support Israel ... whatever).

Not sure if it's a church mandated thing, but most congregations tend to frown on inter-racial relationships also. But this is not something I've heard directly from the pastor so take that how you will. They take this view from the "equally yoked" teachings ... which pretty much is an umbrella for justification of anything you want to be against.

"Well God said so because you aren't equally yoked" ... fucking hypocrites.

Erect,
Obviously, I have not attended the same Southern Baptist churches as you. The ones I have attended taught NO "hate" for anyone. The only thing I found strange about them is that they do not dwell on Revelations.

I would suggest you change to another church if yours teaches hate or you believe they are hypocrites. Personally, I don't believe church affiliation makes much difference to God.

I get a kik out of people who for example state that islam has more hatred then christianity. In a nutshell islam is based on christianity which is based on judism. All of the above which are intolerant/racist religions.

Pretty much most religions work on the same principle.
What i call the hitler principle.

To have a successfull religion you need these things.
1) Ability to grow fast, the more members you can recruit, the sooner you as religous leader can get the golden rolls royce, more members = more money. This was the biggest failure of judism, you basically could only become a jew if u where borne one. Christianity and islam fixed that problem.

2) Need for members to channel thier hatred somewhere. In religions this is called satan, he can come in many forms, such as liberals, anything that accuses u to use your brain. (obviously u do not want members who think to be part of ur religion). Hitler choose jews (90% of europe hated jews a good target). Also it serves as a way so the pathetic members do not have to accept blame. My like is fuked up because of jews/satan _______ etc.

3) Need for members to feel better then majority of population.

4) Viral marketing. Heya christianity invented that like 2000 years ago. Don't sell ur religion get ur stupid members too. Tell them that it is a blessing to brainwash new members and get them to join ur religion.

Other ways to make $$$ once ur religion is up and going.
Selling your congregations votes. You can endorse various political leaders. Ussually you get revelations from god. If $$$$ offered are too small and another politician offers more $$$$, no problem u can always get a new revelation.

In PH all the religions sell thier fuking votes. Same holds true for islam, catholics, various other chrisitan sects, born again christians etc.

Thanks for the tips, but I'm done with religion. I do think it's a better foundation for my daughter than everything else that is out there. So I found myself a nice non-denominational place with a kick ass rock and roll band and show up from time to time.

God is important for your longevity, but that is not found in a building with stained glass windows where they circumcise their youth, chant century old hymns and (symbolically) drink blood. It comes from within, and that's what church lacks.

+rep for elime for nipping this bullshit in the bud. Hatred for outsiders is taught by the vast majority of so called "religious" groups.

It doesn't matter what color your skin is, or if you go to a funny looking building and pray on friday, saturday or sunday. Ignorance is prevalent in all groups.

Obama's success is born of demographics, and the absolute mess that neoconservatism has made of this country.

If this is disturbing to some 1) get involved and stop being spectators in your own destinies and 2) recognize that so called minorities in this country have felt the anxieties you're only now beginning to feel for quite some time.

Wish I had time to say more, but I'm busy making money instead of bitching about the, largely fictional, ability of the genetic and cultural predispositions of people who are different than me, to keep me down.

And OP you may not be a racist but you strike me as one of those guys who certainly doesn't leave a room when a good racist joke is being told. Your problem is largely one of lifelong conditioning.

Non-denominational is the way to go -- One doesn't follow precisely what the pasture preaches, but reads from the bible and takes what they want from it. Therefore, one isn't only believing what they are hearing, but are believing what one reads - which is important. I have attended a wide variety of churches, and have found that Christianity fits me best. I don't want to be told that I can't drink warm caffeine (Mormon) and the bible states not to worship idles (Catholics worship idols) etc, so... non denominational suits me :D However, I wouldn't criticize one for their personal beliefs, whether it be Mormonism, Catholicism, Buddhism, to each his own.

There are reasons that "Christians" have disbelief and criticize other religions. Primarily because the Mormons read and practice what the "Book of Mormon" says; furthermore, the book of Mormon has been revised many times. Jehovah's witnesses have odd practices and have been considered more of a cult than a religion because they pray to many Gods and demonstrate sacrifices. And most churches neglect to remember that the Jews are God/Jesus' chosen people..

But all religions have issues and hard feelings for each other, it's mutual.

hmm teaching hate... So teaching my son that Christians are stupid is wrong??

J/k I couldn't resist. In all seriousness though, right or wrong I am predjudice against most religions and although I really try to stay PC around him, eventually he will pick up on my disdain.

But surely by taking what the bible teaches you are accepting the views of one early branch of Christianity - One view of Jesus's life, one interpretation of the events and of his teachings.

I have friend's who are similarly 'relaxed' Christians and while they don't think eating seafood is a sin I doubt they would consider that the virgin birth bit (for example) may have been added to boost the popularity of one sect in a world full of prophets and religious groups fighting for members.

The guys that wrote/compiled the bible did a great job though, must be the most effective sales pitch in history.

A true classic of social control!! I tend to quite enjoy the 'Zeitgeist - The Movie' play on things. Other's may be critical of it's views.

Elime,
Sorry, for the late response. No, I haven't noticed "hatred" of ANY kind taught in the churches I have attended; however, unlike you, I haven't attended ALL churches.

This post was just my opportunity to present what I see as a serious problem to race relations in the U.S. However, it seems that agnostics have taken it over to post about their personal dislike of religion in general.

I am sorry that agnostics feel so strongly about religion but would like some discussion from Christians on the ideas presented in the original post as it concerns race relations in the U.S.
