A lot of you love movies. And I'll bet most of you have seen this one. If so, it's worth another go. The Departed hits all the right notes with a great story, near-flawless direction, wonderful cast, and a top-notch soundtrack.

The Cast (I've chosen these pics because they give nothing away for those who have yet to see the movie)...

DiCaprio

Roger Ebert wrote a review for the movie when it came out. It's a good, short read.

If you haven't seen The Departed, you're missing out on a great experience. If you've seen it at least once, take it for another ride. I've now watched it a few times, and it just keeps getting better.

Regarding the reason for the late review, here the thing...

I'm a big fan of Ebert (been reading him for the last 15 years). You might know that in addition to his ongoing reviews, he has a "Great Movies" category. He once said he refuses to include a movie in this category until it has aged at least a decade following his initial review. He did this with Goodfellas. He also did this with Mean Streets (actually, this latter movie took him 30 years).

His reason? Because according to him, the films that deserve such treatment have a slightly different flavor each time you watch them. Sometimes, it's because we grow, and experience things that make us look at stories differently. Other times, it's because we miss things during the first, second, and even third viewings.

I agree with him.

For me, movies like The Departed are rare. So rare that when I watch them, I have the feeling I'm watching something... special. Hundreds of movies are released each year. Very few accomplish what Scorsese has done in this and other films.

The OP was less a review, and more to encourage anyone who hasn't seen the film to do so.

makes sense. there are some movies that are awesome to watch initially but dont hold up to the sands of time. watched gladiator last night and loved it again, def a timeless flick.

gonna take a wild guess but i think any movie that uses CGI (short of one or two short scenes where it is REALLY needed) will not hold up well with time.
