In this little segment I have taken some of the ideas from a paper called The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity and am applying some of the ideas to the world of affiliate marketing.

H - Helpless - In the top left panel we have an AM that is losing money or getting paid very little for his time and effort. He is driving good quality traffic to the advertiser and promoting an offer that benefits the consumer, however he himself is losing out because he isn't efficient enough to make enough gains to make it worth his time.

I - Intellegent - In the top right panel we have an AM that is able to deliver a quality product to the consumer, benefit the advertiser and make a hefty profit for himself in the process. It is difficult to do all these things, thus it requires the most ability.

S - Stupid - In the bottom left panel we have an AM that is creating fraudulent leads that hurt the advertiser and himself. He spent time and resources only to fuck himself over in the end because the network found out and banned his ass.

B - Bandit - In the bottom right panel we have an AM that is benefiting himself and the advertiser just fine. However he is fucking over the consumer by selling a crappy product. This is a popular way of doing business, however that consumer will never knowingly buy anything from the same sources again. The bandit will have to continually change his online identity and use deception to lure helpless consumers.

One point is that it is NOT only consumers that are driven by their emotions when they buy. We are also driven by emotions when we sell to them. We do not make purely rational decisions in business because we are incapable of doing so as human beings.

We would like to think of ourselves as always occupying the square in the illustration portrayed that is flattering to our ego. However during any given campaign we can take on any one of these roles. These roles can also switch during the campaign.

The examples I gave were specific to affiliate marketing but were meant to be looked at more like analogies. If see it too literally you are sure to miss the point.

There were three parties involved in each scenario.

  1. Consumer
  2. Advertiser and Network (lumped together for sake of simplicity)
  3. Affiliate Marketer
Consider who benefited in each situation and who lost out.

  • Why did the affiliate marketer in each example act the way he did?
  • What is his worldview?
  • Are the marketer and consumer even people or archetypes?
  • Why is it difficult for all parties to benefit equally from a sale?
  • If I'm not in the square I want to be in how can I take on a more desirable role?
  • What tactics would the marketers in each square use to sell?
These questions could go on forever. Look at the illustrations and note the symbols used to deepen your understanding.

Certain types of knowledge can't reveal itself without contemplation. I'm showing you things that inspire my thought process. This can be the beginning of many more ideas or stop here. That depends on you.
