Its that time of the year again when I need to take backups and switch hosts. Im planning on going with HostGator this time for their 'baby' package and I wanted to know whats the benefit of having a dedicated IP? It may be a little noobish, but Id really like to know. Also, if you can reccomend me an alternative host, shoot.

I'm not 100% sure on this, never had a dedi IP myself, but I'm pretty sure that if you want a SSL Cert, then you need a dedi IP.

Being on a shared IP means you could potentially be sharing that IP with a bunch of shitty spam sites and some have theorized that Google may ban IPs that are heavy on the spam, or at the very least penalize them to some degree.

I have had a shared hosting account with HG for almost 4 years and I can tell you you won't be disappointed.

I suppose you need a dedicated IP on a shared host only if you need a ssl cert, or in case you want to make sure your inbox mail delivery rate isn't affected by some other asshole spamming from that server, but this sounds a bit paranoid.

I've had a hostagator account for a few years... 5 I think and never had a problem - had some pretty high traffic sites on there also

Aha. Is this the same as coming close to a VPS?
