Jacob Weisberg at Slate has written a piece on Peter Thiel, one of the early backers of Facebook...

Hyper-libertarian Facebook billionaire Peter Thiel's appalling plan to pay students to quit college. - By Jacob Weisberg - Slate Magazine

Weisberg paints him as a crazy libertarian (one of those pesky no-good freedom-mongers). He also mentions a new project backed by Thiel called Seasteading.

The Mission of Seasteading...

"To further the establishment and growth of permanent, autonomous ocean communities, enabling innovation with new political and social systems." (More info here and here.)

I know nothing of Thiel, but he has the capital to move on his ideas. I thought a few of you might find the stuff interesting.

The writer of the article just comes off as asinine. Oohh "hyper-libertarianism" so scary. Give me a break.

I had the same impression. In fact, while reading the article, I kept thinking, "and what the heck is wrong with that idea?"

I don't usually read Weisberg, but was interested in knowing more about Thiel.

Cool article, and Thiel's idea of creating completely politically autonomous(albeit sea-based) communities is incredibly ambitious. And the author of that article is a typical statist hack.

"Thiel, who is openly gay, wants to flee the mob, not rally it through gold-hoarding or flag-waving."

Gotta love how he just tosses out the fact that he's gay...

Writer has a stick up his ass for Thiel for some reason. I think the idea is awesome. While I doubt the legitimacy of the author's perceptions of Thiel's thoughts on the American university system, I strongly agree with what has been written. The system is as ineffective as ever, and solely exists to make money.

" Led by Milton Friedman's pajama-wearing grandson, this may be the most elaborate effort ever devised by a group of computer nerds to get invited to an orgy. (Let's build our own Deepwater Horizon with legal prostitution!)"

HURR DURRRRR. God damn I hate Slate

"This threatens to turn the risk-taking startup model into a white boy's version of the NBA, diverting a generation of young people from the love of knowledge for its own sake and respect for middle-class values."

LOL. What a fuckwit. The vast minority go for the sake of knowledge. People go to school to be competitive in the job market (and to party or find a girl/guy).

The people who go for knowledge are graduate students in the sciences or humanities, and even then it's rare. Many of them just want a damn job. People who go just to learn are typically older students.

I like Thiel, and the writer is an ass. But, at least in this case, I don't think Thiel has an "idea." He is a backer- which is great, too. Seasteading has been tried before and as an idea has been around for a long time. I read articles about it and Patri Friedman years ago.

That was silly. I get what Weisberg is doing. He doesn't agree with Thiel's ideas, so he takes a subtle jab at the guy. It's easier, and he gets traction for it in simple minds. Politicians do it a lot, too.

The sad thing is, it works. I can imagine someone out there reading the article, making an incredibly obtuse connection...

"Lessee, I don't like gays. And this Thiel guy is gay. Wait? He's a libertarian?! What is it with those libertarians? That's it! I'm not voting for Angle."

Makes no sense. But it happens. A couple folks in my family think this way.

It's hard for the writer to grasp this concept, considering he went to Yale and then Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship (all expenses paid, mind you) and is now working as a writer in at a liberal rag.

Yeah, but he's all about the pure knowledge and middle class values, baby... ;)

What a pair of fuckin douches. An Ivory Tower, under-motivated Lefty tool commenting on a narcissistic, sociopathic pole-smoker.

Only in Amerika, folks, lol.
