You know, I was just poking around Digg like I always do when fishing for information and entertainment and once in a while I even come across a good piece of information.

Take this article for example: Shuzak.com | Anatomy of a Successful Social Network

Pretty good in my opinion. As I'm reading it and get down to a section that touches on Ads and relevancy I get an interesting thought. Will there ever come a time where it becomes "polite" to click on an ad when visiting a site? Do you click on an ad of a site you visit just as a thank you? Say you find your competition's arbitrage site which turns out to be a veritable cornucopia of information. Do you click on one of their ads? The argument for doing that is that you're helping them out and it costs you nothing to do so. And more can probably be found for doing so. The arguments against is that it hurts the advertisers and more could probably be found for that too.

I'm just curious as to what you think.

That was a really great article. Thanks...niche is the future, how damn right.

I don't think i would ever be polite towards another site to add revenue to someone else's pocket. IMO...humans are just naturally selfish in nature. Especially for non-existent charitable marketers, people would rather prefer to see your site burn in hell so that there'll be less competition.

fraud is fraud, what's there to think?

is it polite to steal a candy from a store and give it to a homeless person?

I click ads if I think the site is good...

I see it as a thankyou for being kickass... Although a given I'll usually only click an ad if I find some interest in it and plan on reading at least a little of what the ad has to offer... I'm not out to hurt either party, just want both to think they're getting their money's worth.

Do I see it as polite? No... I see it as survival of the fittest and I'm helping the strong survive.

I'm not sure of the accuracy, and I can't remember where I read it (possibly digg), but there was talk that "charity clicking" is counterproductive in that if google is measuring conversions in setting their payouts, and since your "charity click" doesn't convert, in the long run it's actually bad for the site in question.

Except in this case its not a homeless person, its more like your neighborhood hotdog man.

Don't click on ads just to click on them. It's stupid and helps nobody in the long run.

  • The adveriser wastes money and these advertisers, collectively, are what many people at WF make a living on. Appreciate them.
  • The affiliate conversion rate drops and they could be smartpriced
  • The clicker should feel guilty for being such an asshat
That being said, if I'm on a site and I'm genuinely interested in a product, I have no problem clicking it knowing it is an ad. On the other side of the coin, I might see an interesting ad on another site that I DON'T want to give my money and I'll hover, see the url, and type it into the nav bar rather than get them paid.

Charity clicking is click fraud and defeats this great Internet Marketing system that gives EVERY party involved the opportunity to earn more money (affiliates and advertisers) and have easy access to information and insight (website visitors). Treat the industry with some respect. Sure, find tricks and workarounds and exploits and opportunities... but click fraud is cowardly.

Good point. I've never been a charity clicker. If the ads don't have anything of interest, no point in costing the advertiser money when I'm not buying. However, if there is an ad that catches my eye, I don't have a problem checking it out. I figure that way, it's a legit click, and I have bought things that way.

I dont click adsense eather unless of course they are selling a 97$ ebook on how to make money online, then ill check that shit out!!!!!!!!!!!

it only "polite" to the advertiser
