Anyone read this article in the times?

Singularity: Kurzweil on 2045, When Humans, Machines Merge - TIME

fucking fascinating. Makes me really excited to be young.

basically, technology is progressing at an exponential rate -- singularity is what happens when technology is so advanced that we can't continue to predict it's progress, because it's now superintelligent entities (AI and such) that are controlling technology.

the article also suggests that old age is pretty much a curable sickness, and that at some point we'll be able to live forever if we choose to.

what do you guys think about it? bullshit? a possibility? a definite? i'm sure we've got a variety of opinions here :)

i don't know about you guys, but i have full plans on becoming a badass cyborg

I can say without a doubt that Ray Kurzweil has influenced what I want to do with my life more than any other person. I read most of his books a couple years ago and it blew my mind.

I think everything he said is pretty much on the mark. Moore's law should continue long enough to reach the point that we'll be able to cheaply create computers that are smarter than us. And that's all we need to do to get singularity started.

Been following Kurzweil for close to 14 years now. I would go as far as to call him a modern Einstein. His ideas and predictions may sound fanatical and idealistic to the point of delusion, but he has this uncanny ability of actually being right 99% of the time.

How is this good? Why would you want to "merge" into a singularity? You would be non existent at that point. Talk about socialism.

Processor speed does not equal intelligence... I think we need quantum computers to enter that realm.

Holy shit...I need some weed in order to properly digest the ramifications of this.

You know what's really scary about this?

Historically, Sci-Fi movies have predicted the future with eerie accuracy.

There have been tons of movies about computers becoming so intelligent that they enslave or eliminate the majority of us FOR OUR OWN GOOD. That's so logical that I'm seriously worried.

I can just see a complex computer creating something that will destroy all technology on earth and send us back to the dark ages in order to protect us from destroying the planet and each other completely (nuclear weapons etc.).

Shouldn't you be working?

as a philosophy major, this was one of my favorite things to study. It's a definition as perfect as the definition of God....there's no way to prove it wrong. Really fucks with your mind.

For me the implications of this (or something like it -- which is what I have come to trust as true) are shattering.

Perhaps this is why we really can achieve anything we imagine vividly and fervently as being our personal reality.

Another thought...this might not be possible because we may lack the intelligence to develop it.

Garbage in, Garbage out.
