Ok so I've taken some local techniques I pulled from this site (thank you) and am starting to branch out, pulling sales from local businesses. One of my focuses is on restaurants (I know owners of several) and I stumbled upon some competition:

hxxp://www.cheetahspotz.com/

This is the closest thing I've seen to competition in my area... I feel bad for them. They presented one of the businesses with a half-folded sheet of thick paper with a list of businesses that have paid them to be on this paper.

And it was in 20 pt Comic Sans with a cheetah spot background.

This proves (at least in my area) that the local niche hasn't come close to being dominated. All you have to do is make something on the internet that doesn't look like it came out of 1994 and you're golden.

That is the worst design I cannot even see half the words.

Hey guys, cut him some slack. We all like to gloat about how much better we are than the competition.

Light House: If you're just doing local, might I suggest you take a look into blue casting, and potentially even QR Codes.
I've already posted a thread about Bluecasting on the forum somewhere (in the traffic section), and I'm still mucking about with QR Codes, but reckon I'll have enough info & field testing in a month or two to write up a qualified article myself.

Only issue with QR Codes is that you need to be in an area that's fairly metropolitan. people out in the sticks usually don't have 3G phones that support it.

Harvey: thanks for the info. I'll probably go play around with it in airports; I used to wardrive a lot way back when.

Aim: this was an example of the competitive analysis I've been doing. I'm in a pretty big area population-wise but this is all I've found. It was more of a motivational thing... and if you don't mind face time with business owners then it's pretty lucrative.

Here's one idea that I've been thinking about doing.
1) Find a high-payout zip submit for a free gas card.
2) Get a domain along those lines (freegascard.com) that just redirects to the offer
3) Print out a bunch of stickers that have your website with some ad copy.
4) Give some kids 20 bucks each to go to gas stations and put the stickers on top of the gas nozzles. While people are seeing their bank accounts dwindle because of 4/gal gas, they'll remember your website.

If anyone tries this, I'd like to hear about it.
