Newspaper Chain’s New Business Plan: Copyright Suits | Threat Level | Wired.com

Watch what you post on your blogs. Watch what your visitors post on your blogs or you might just end up getting sued for copyright violations.

I guess this could be a method of taking out the competition. Keep posting comments with articles from other sites on thier blogs until they get sued and take their site down.

Trial lawyers are one of the MANY hip pockets that this administration is in. So expect shit like this to only get worse.

You had better mash up those autoblogs a bit better or turn them off completely.

lol @ the trolling company suing a user generated content site instead of sending a DMCA. If they keep that up, they'll be getting nowhere, and will be pissing off the courts.

I heard about this last month from a friend in vegas, they initially went after some big name sites including norml.org

should be a pet project for /b/

Thats why of course at the other forum I was on, you could only post an article and pieces and link to it, so that someone would have to goto the site regardless in order to see the whole thing. And there are of course ways to get around it via Fair Use if you're scrutinizing the article itself, or citing it as a source of other work.

But yea good business plan considering how many people copy articles in whole. Can't say I'd want to be a lawyer handling all that.

cough Fair Use cough

We've seen lawyers go after copyright and piracy since the Interwebz became popular. And we've seen how well they've done so far.

Ask for forgiveness, not permission.

buying out the copyrights to newspaper content for the sole purpose of suing

I guess money talks, but are the odds that good that most companies would sell out their content? If a newspaper company is hurt bad enough then it seems appealing. I can't see this being implemented for content snippets, probably a major source of visitors for newspapers. Maybe with all the money he is trekking on he can fix his shoemoney turkeyneck.
