Tips On Moving To San Diego...

Time for a change of scenery.

I've only visited once, stayed in Mission Bay, and loved that part of town.

I'm looking to get a studio, trying not to spend more than $900 a month but that may be slumming it, not sure.

I'd like a place that's walking distance to beaches, shopping, nightlife, etc.

Any recommendations on areas of town to look into? To stay away from?

Ideally I'd like to find a furnished/month-to-month rental in that price range, but scouring Craigslist that's not looking too likely.

I can furnish a studio when I get there, so that's not a huge deal.

Any tips are appreciated.

Edited to add: I really don't want roommates since I do the whole make moniez online thing and need a quiet/private space for that. Unless it's other marketers or cool people who are never home, I'd prefer to live alone.
 


Craigs List has higher priced rentals than you may find elsewhere, such as at rental listing services like Westside Rentals. I am going to sign up with them before I move to Los Angeles.

Landlords know people go trawling CL for low prices, so people read it figuring they're seeing the best deals when they are not.

You made an excellent point about not wanting roommates that would be hanging around all day. One good thing about working online is you can look at housing that isn't exactly ideally located for a commute to an office.

Are you looking in La Jolla and Coronado?

You'll be close to the border, ideal for cheap swinging in Tijuana. Party! Party! (Is it safe?)

I have been wishing that Affiliate Summit would move to San Diego. Enough with Vegas!
 
The last time I went was in February, only stayed 3 days, and I was at John Carton's seminar, so not a lot of time to check out the city. I did get out a little bit, but mostly in the Mission Bay area.

I just booked a flight to go out there. Leaving tonight to spend a week checking it out.

Advice is still appreciated, but I'm going to make a point to check out most of the places that I've heard are good on my own, and probably just check on rental rates in person.

By the way, if anyone's in the area, I know absolutely no one out there. I'm getting into town at around midnight tonight and staying for a week. If anyone wants to show me where the cool kids hang I'll buy the first round.
 
My Brother and 2 of My guys are down there this week for the IRCE show and actually my bro is looking to move down there this july as well so i think he is looking around for places in the same area.

Hit him up when you land and if anything we know a bunch of people down and a lot of good bars :)

Stayed on a boat in Mission Bay for a year way back when, Could be fun and a little cheaper then an apartment if you can find the right rental.
 
Scott, I'm about an houir & half south of SD.

Make it up there every weekend for the bunch & fun! If you haven't been there in a while, there's a couple places I can recommend.

Right on the boardwalk near Belmont park(big old roller coaster) there is a place called , "The Wave House" big surfing wave there to ride on (it's cheap and gnarly), awesome FOOD! Great environment, and good drinks.

After your done with dinner, you could head on down the street to the "Sand Bar" which is a nice bar, two stories, and you can look @ the ocean from the top floor. Pretty nice little bar.

I know lots of good food around there. I hope you have fun.

I live in Bay Park, slightly east of the 5 (I can step outside and see Mission Bay right now).

Not sure where you're moving from, but get a place in pacific beach, preferably west of Ingraham Drive (the main north to south street in the area). West of that street is all the fun, you're no more than 7 blocks from the beach at all times, all the bars and shit.

Don't get a studio, you can rent a 1 bedroom for the same price and you won't be shittin where you're cookin where you're eatin where you're working.

I recommend coming down and crashing at a friends house or at a hotel for a few weekdays and literally just driving up and down the streets looking for places. The ones on Craigslist will get snatched up way too quickly, especially with all the frat boys and sluts from SDSU out for the summer now.

I saw a few places available on Grand Ave (2nd main West To East street in PB) today when I drove down the street. There are apartment complexes fucking everywhere. You'll find something.

Don't live in Clairemont, it's like living in the Valley. PM me and we can exchange contact info for when you get down here.

Finally, in regards to living with people: look for rooms in places with students in them. Lots of nerdy Christian kids that go to USD that live in this area, you should be able to score a room with them where you can work and rock some headphones and be at peace. Would make it easier in terms of finding a furnished place, plus it will only be like $5-600/month and it will most likely be sublet/month to month.
 
ALOT of internet guys in SD. Def a great spot for the online marketing world.

Honestly, where you live is dependant on your age and motives are.

If you are younger and looking to party, then Pacific Beach is hands down the spot. If you are more into the city, club scene, then the Gaslamp district or Little Italy is great. If you are trying to chill in a nice, quiet beach area, North County is exactly that.

That's really what makes SD so awesome IMO... everything you want is inside of what we call "San Diego". Its something for everyone, and heck, being voted the 3rd best weather in the world doesnt hurt either.. (except June, screw June Gloom).
 
We're around 30 mins north in Carlsbad. However, unless you're looking for some place super slow and mellow I'd suggest downtown or PB. Depends on your age and outcome. If you're in your 20's and like to party go with PB. If you're a hippy go with OB. If you're a yuppyish go with La Jolla. If you're 30+ go and like building living, elevators all that time and that crap, go with Gas Lamp or Little Italy as Ryan said.
 
Well, I'm here. Thanks for all of the replies!

I got in around 11pm last night. I'm staying in a hotel about a mile from the airport.

Walked around aimlessly until some nice people told me to go check out the bars in Little Italy. I was surprised they stopped serving at 1am.

Walked around some more, found a little Mexican restaurant that had the best fucking tacos on the planet and served beer 'til 2am.

Now I have to work until probably around 5, a lot of stuff I planned on getting done on the trip I couldn't just because working on planes/in airports is a PITA.

As soon as I'm finished working I'll definitely hit up some people.

Here's my situation...

Been online for around 4-5 years. I'm 28 now.

I've been thinking a lot lately about why I got into this in the first place, and it's freedom, not money so much, but the freedom to work when/where I want to and only answer to people I choose to answer to.

Why San Diego?

The last time I was here I dunno, this place just has a vibe/energy about it. Maybe it passes if you stay here long enough, but my body just stays in like happiness overdrive when I'm here.

I'm flying through work that would take me 3x as long to do at home just because I want to get outside (no work for a week after today).

I would love to be able to wake up and go running on the beach every morning. Something about the ocean just clears my mind.

Money wise, I make a comfortable living.

I could afford more than the $900 I mentioned, but I'm weird about living way under my means.

Most of you guys would laugh at the car I drive. I live in a rental house that I share with a guy whose been my best friend since we were kids. It's nothing special.

A big thing about it is I've lived in the same town my whole life. I love my friends, most of them I've known since I was a kid, but they're all in construction/manual labor/dead end jobs, and I just want to slap the shit out of them, tell them we're almost 30 and to do something they're going to enjoy and make a future out of.

The last time I was here I was hanging out with guys who I can hold a conversation with about marketing, direct response, copywriting and all aspects of my business. It was really cool. This is really an isolated job and my "real life" friends have no idea WTF I'm talking about when they ask me about it.

I do like to party. I'm pretty responsible, but I'm also the type of guy who'll wake up, decide I feel like hitting up Vegas and fly out the same day.

That's actually how I got here. When I started this thread I wasn't planning on coming out here.

About an hour later I decided to book a flight/hotel and left last night.

Anyway, appreciate the tips. I'm going to hit up some of the people who PM'd me, and if anyone wants to meet up feel free to PM me.
