Anyone here have any problems downloading torrents lately?
Starting yesterday, my torrent downloads are stuck with a status that says "Connecting to peers"
Is it likely that my IPS is blocking me?

I get that every once in a while too.

I don't know what it is - I just wait it out and it seems to fix itself sooner or later. It has never taken over a day for me, though.

Once, I had to upgrade my uTorrent client again and that fixed it, but that was a bug in the previously downloaded upgrade that needed to be fixed.

I doubt you're getting blocked.

:P

Some of the old ones or ones with no seeders hang at that forever. Some at 99% done for a long time that never get to finish because nobody seeded the entire thing.

If you're worried about your ISP is it safe to assume you're not using a VPN? It's like $5 a month get it right now.

As to the question. It's probably a local problem. Ie.. Router, firewall, torrent client, VPN client, Start there

ISP blocked you or its an firewall issue.

If not then try alternatives like utorrent/bittorrent/vuze/turbobt etc.

Check your wireless router...

I could surf online, etc. But torrents would'nt work. Or they would and then it would just die/stop after a few min.

I guess torrents are really hard on routers.

My ISP recently throttled me. I started downloading a bunch of torrents, and it was great -- was getting download rates of like 1.5mbps. Then they obviously got pissy, and now I can't even watch a Youtube video without it buffering.

Fuck torrents. Go to Usenet.

Much safer, since their is no peering/uploading aspect to it. And quicker, since it'll saturate your entire connection. I regularly get 6MB/s downloads out of my 50Mbps connection.

6MBs? REALLY?!!!

Really? Is that all the speed you get from UseNet?

Shit, here at the house I still use uTorrent 1.8.2 on a 75/35 connection with 3 desktops running torrents, 3 HD FIOS boxes, and a Laptop all running almost constantly.

Two of the desktops are seeding 24/7 and on my Private Torrent trackers I get on average 8MBs (& 12MBs on some.) download speeds on torrents with 8 or more seeds.

I was actually thinking about switching to UseNet because I heard it was FAAAAASSTT!!!

But at 6MBs, I'll keep grabbing my stuff for FREE.

I've found that quite a few of my Private Sites in the last 6 months are having this issue more than they use to. I have no clue what's up with it.

I know that Elbitz has been REAL bad about this lately. Even my finished and seeding torrents are coming up with 404 tracker errors or the Connecting to Peers error.

I've surmised that it's on the torrent sites end, maintenance or provider issues since they usually clear up in a few days. But Elbitz has been out for almost a week for me at times. The site is accessible, but when getting a torrent there are tracker issues.

And BEFORE some Wise ASS spouts off.....YES!!! I know the difference between a udp-Magnet Link and an HTTP-Torrent link!! Lulz

I don't think it's "your" ISP but the trackers for your torrents that are the issue if you are getting the Peer error.

But as others have said, if you're not using a static IP setup with port forwarding done correctly you would certainly have issues. As well as if your firewall settings aren't correct. I'm assuming that all your settings are OK in my above statements though.

P.S. With KAT (Kick Ass Torrents_ I know..I know...not a Private Tracker. lol) a magnet icon will load the primary call trackers. I've been having to also click the Torrent link after clicking the Magnet Link to get ALL the trackers to load for the torrent. If not it will be either trying to connect forever or getting the Connecting to Peers for ever.

I only use qbTorrent for that site since I like how it uses Magnet Links better than uTorrent. Until recently with the qbTorrent update, I was having to start the torrent with Magnet link, then click the Torrent Link and use uTorrent to load ALL the trackers. Then I would have to copy the trackers from the torrent in uTorrent and then paste them in the torrent in qbTorrent to get the torrents to have access to all the UDP trackers for the Magnet link.

It was a TOTAL PITA, but a man needs his PORN!!!

With that statement, this may be pointless.

If you are suddenly getting REALLY slow DL/UL speeds and using uTorrent, checkout the above video for a quick and easy fix to get your speeds back again.

P.S. The FIX is in like the LAST 30 seconds of the video.

looks like the issue was on the torrent end. things seem to have cleared up now and working fine again. This was the first time I've had this issue.
I'm going to be looking into both usenet and a VPN though as well.

6MB/s = 48Mbps. Out of a 50Mbps connection. Meaning that it saturates 96% of my available bandwidth every single time. Basic math. There are plenty of people with faster connections who get faster speeds. If you have a 75Mbps connection, you can expect about 9MB/s from every single Usenet download.

I can download a 1GB TV episode in less than 3 minutes in a single direct download over SSL. No waiting for peers to finish uploading and seeding before its fully available. No need to maintain any ratio anywhere or worrying about peers or being vulnerable to ISP/MPAA tracking.

Combining Usenet with Sabnzbd, Sickbeard, CouchPotato and XBMC, I have a fully automated system in place.

Thanks for the reply.

I seem to always get the MB/s & Mbps (Bytes vs Bits) messed up in my head. Thanks for reminding me.

SPEED and quality/integrity of the file transfers are my main reasons for considering UseNet.

Thanks for bumping me on the head to get me back on track.

Get a seedbox. I get 10+ MB/s downloads frequently. Then just VPN to the seedbox and pull the stuff down. Call me paranoid, but I like the ISP having no clue what I'm transferring.

Occasionally all my downloads go slow, not just torrents. In these cases I shut off my router for a good 5-10 minutes. When I start it back up I get a new IP and things always correct themselves.

I've got a 10mb line and get a full 10mb (about 1 megabyte per second) from eztv.it and Pirate Bay torrents. My buddy told me the other day that Movistar (formerly Telefonica) gave him 30mb so I need to call them to see if I can get it too.
