To Protest Hiring of Nonunion Help, Union Hires Nonunion Picket

Billy Raye, a 51-year-old unemployed bike courier, is looking for work.

Fortunately for him, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters is seeking paid demonstrators to march and chant in its current picket line outside the McPherson Building, an office complex here where the council says work is being done with nonunion labor.

"For a lot of our members, it's really difficult to have them come out, either because of parking or something else," explains Vincente Garcia, a union representative who is supervising the picketing.

So instead, the union hires unemployed people at the minimum wage—$8.25 an hour—to walk picket lines. Mr. Raye says he's grateful for the work, even though he's not sure why he's doing it. "I could care less," he says. "I am being paid to march around and sound off."

i actually used to be a professional protester back in college. Best damn job I ever had.

Unions around the area would hire me to hang out and protest places they were mad at. They never send their own members. I got paid 50 bucks for 3 hrs(back when $50 was a lot of money to me and the rest of the economy), drunkeness/stoned was encouraged because the rowdier we got the better job we did, it was for the most part unsupervised. I'd usually show up an hour or so late. I got to protest whenever I wanted and I got paid $10 per friend i brought who also got paid 50 bucks each. So i'd usually just load up my car full of people who wanted to make some extra money, get drunk and go. They always paid in cash at the end of the shift. Most of the time I had no idea what i was even protesting, if people asked I'd just hand them a flyer and say read it. Once in awhile someone from the union would come by and tell us he wanted us to raise hell on every car that drove through so our drunk asses would chase em around the parking lot and yell at people and stuff and cause general mayhem as long as we stayed off the property of whoever we were protesting for.

It was a blast to say the least.

I'm not sure it's the wisest job choice for me because I'd start throwing trash cans at moving vehicles and beating up old ladies and shit.

Jesus christ why didn't I know of this back in college? They could have used an angry white female in their midst and I could have used the dough.

edit: oh and is using non union help to protest using non union help like using social media to spread the word of how social media doesn't work? :P
