I was reading over an SEO report on my site and there was a part that mentioned the sites I link to and Google's view on who I think is important in my niche by whom I link to on say The Blogroll.

I've not done this so far as didn't want to pass on link juice to competitor sites but is this important for me to do?

I know 3 or 4 sites in my niche that are more popular than mine right now - is it helpful to my own SEO to link to them in a Useful Links section on my site to show Google I'm amongst that niche or will I just give them a backlink for no gain of my own?

Cheers guys.

As Google's algorithms have become more complex there are many more factors involved in your sites ranking. One of these seems to be outbound links. The logic for this (I imagine) is that if your site is giving out super targeted links to authority sites, then the user experience on your site is superior.

Google's bots have always been designed to basically rank sites for user experience/usefulness. Obviously doing this with quantitative factors like links and keyword density means that it can be abused. However as the computing power available to Google increases, and their algorithms improve they will have the ability to build up a much broader and sophisticated view of your site.

Obviously don't make your whole strategy about having outbound links, but they can be a valid part of your SEO plan.

Its good. Include the KW but add some extra words and put it near the end of the page and make it blend in with the other text. Also make it nofollow if you can be bothered.

I agree with Ulixes point of view that Google make thought on these lines, but not sure about it..
