I've been doing link building for awhile now and wanted to share a link building strategy i've picked up.

Build a widget that people can embed on their websites

If you have money, you can outsource this pretty easily. Make sure to include a link to your site in whatever embeddable widget you come up with. Has to be something that provides value - something that people will use.

Some examples:

1) Weather websites - I've seen some weather websites take off when they started to allow people to display their local weather on their pages. There are a ton of local business sites, government sites, ect that are using the widgets. Each time someone uses the widget, the weather site had a new backlink.

2) A popular music related website lets people sell their own music on the site. They split the money and both win. What they did was create a widget that people could embed on their sites, and it would allow you to preview the songs, see their price, ect. Really nice widget and i'm sure they spent less than $3k on it. Now they dominate their competition in the search engines because they have low x,xxx, xxx artist affiliates with the widget on their personal site.. all linking back to the main site.

Let me know what you think, and if anyone can expand on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Sure, it's a great idea. The trouble is creating a widget that most people will want to place on their websites.

If you can accomplish this however, (see addthis.com's traffic stats), then you probably wont care about free links any longer. You'll be too busy focusing on multi milion dollar VC deals and buy offers.

I think it would be much easier to get people to embed your widget if you have an affiliate program for your site.

Affiliates are the easiest people to get to build links for you =p

Google will rape you. This was a strategy abused by paid directory owners in the heydays of DP Forums.. some 5-6 years back?

It's working very will for the site im checking out. As long as you have a lot of diverse backlinks from different source with different anchors... a lot of anchors with your domain name in them.

It looks like around 25% of this sites inbound links are from the widget, and it has a highly competitive keyword in the backlink.. which is causing them to rank #1 for that keyword.

They are a pretty large site - seems like they are able to get away with this easier.
