Today on Bloomberg:

More U.S. Citizens Toss Passports as IRS Seeks Hidden Assets - Bloomberg

The number of U.S. taxpayers renouncing their citizenship more than doubled to 1,534 in 2010 from 742 in 2009, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

More taxpayers renounced their U.S. citizenship in 2010 than in the previous three years combined, or in any year since at least 2003, according to data compiled by Andrew Mitchel, an international tax attorney in Essex, Connecticut.

The increase was prompted in part by the U.S. government’s growing efforts to find and tax the hidden assets of U.S. citizens around the world.

Citizens Renounce U.S. Over Taxes

My question: Why? What's going on here that the MSM is allowing us to know that the US is hemmoraging record numbers of citizens due to evil tax laws?

Paging geomark!

Probably because it's tax day here in the good ol' USA and with the yearlong uproar over the wealth gap this is a good sensational story that will get eyeballs to the MSM's papers and websites.

Not much going on here other than businesses employing solid media marketing tactics and taking advantage of a divisive issue on a day when millions will be reading articles and seeking information about taxes.

I, for one, say good for them. Maybe the newspaper industry (online and offline) isn't quite as dumb as they've seemed to be for the past 25 years when it comes to marketing a product.

Luke, I got your PM, I'm wondering if my reply went through. I didn't get any msg indicating it didn't so I'm assuming it did.

Yeah, you're mostly right, I suppose, but I have to really wonder about that last part. I simply cannot accept the fact that the MSM is not as stupid as a bag of dog poop.

No, I didn't seem to get it! Can you send again?

1500 of 350 million is not a hemorrhage. more like an imagined scrapewound. they blow that out of proportion to open public opinion towards more restrictive tax laws

It is not 1500 our of 350 million it is 1500 our of whatever number is actually paying taxes which is a much smaller number. (to lazy to look it up)

Anyone giving up citizenship to get out of paying taxes is probably paying much more than the average person. Is it the death of America? No of course not but the trend is the problem. The anti wealth and business feeling in this country is getting worse so we will be seeing more and more people leaving.

Actually, it's far worse than that. About half of Americans don't pay income taxes. Add the millions who work for the gov't or receive welfare. (People who work for the gov't don't pay taxes. They're paid out of taxes.) The people who are leaving are the productive ones. What will happen when more productive people flee? Will Atlas shrug?

^Alla that and don't overlook the fact that it's a TREND. Doubling or more in recent years. Next year, especially if any of Obamacare is passed, we'll see 3000-5000 taxpayers flee the country for good.

Doesn't take a genius to see that america is going down the shitter.

thats approximately .001% of the population. soon therell be noone left. keep in mind that renouncing your citizenship is a process that takes a couple years. you cant just book a flight to singapore, walk into the embassy and get rid of that piece of paper. those who renounce their citizenships now probably began doing in before obama got elected.

only problem for you guys is: if its already big enough to hit the media, by the time youre eligible for citizenship riddance, it might be way too late.

other than that, if you really begin to "lack productive people", just give out a couple more greencards a year. there are still enough productive people who want in

Yeah, I don't believe I have enough posts to even reply and I don't want to spam the boards up just to get access.

Any one of the mods can give you my email along with my forum ID so you know who it is. I authorize that use of my registration info in this case.

To any mod who has the privileges go ahead and send Luke the email I registered with.

Thanks!

Luke PM a mod and link my post please. = )

Like Charles alluded to, it's not about the population at large, it's about the income earners. It's shaving the very top income earners off the top and meanwhile only something sad like 40% pay their taxes anymore anyway... with 30% USING tax money in social services, so every penny counts... Only funny Fiat money is keeping us going now, so every million $ that leaves this nation is $ million out of the money pool and causes more inflation. Our shitty cash gets weaker, and there are few jobs left after these business owners leave. I'd say every Last one of these ppl are important to the continued survival of this nation... Which of course is fully doomed no matter what if Paul isn't elected.

Don't even get me started on this Anal intrusion! See my 4K post thread for my feelings about this bullshit.

Done, thanks.

Even if there's only a conservative 1 in 3 Americans paying their taxes, 1500 people leaving the country is such an insignificant number that it's not even worth noting. It about as significant as the change in your couch is to the national debt.

1500, out of whatever the number of millions we're talking about, is still an insignificant figure. Probably something like 1/10,000 of a percent or less.

Whoopty fucking doo.

Like white flight in Detroit on a much, much smaller scale.

People with money and means out, left with idiots and poor people.

Those 1500 people probably had the combined income of 5,000,000 "normal" people lol

U.S. to Become Tax Debtors' Prison

Based on this very sedate-sounding bill...

The way taxes are handled in the bill reminds me of how the UIGEA was stuffed into the Safe Port Act awhile back. Disgusting.

Doesn't really matter if they want to keep you here or not. If you have enough money and friends in the other country you'll still be able to get there. Even if someone did take that route they should still pay their taxes owed.

Wow, in an infrastructure bill called "Move Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century??!?!" That's so bad it's like naming a Military expansion "the Peace law."

Section 40304 of the legislation states that any individual who owes more than $50,000 to the Internal Revenue Service may be subject to “action with respect to denial, revocation, or limitation of a passport”.
So from this at least we know that we have until that 50,000th dollar of debt to the IRS to GTFO. Of course once you're out, uncle sam can still reach in whatever bank account you set up overseas anyway, so nevermind... This bill needs to be killed with fire.

A few things.

One is that citizenship renunciations seem to be grossly under reported by the US government even though they have a legal requirement to do so and to make it public. Quite a few posts with anecdotal evidence over at The Isaac Brock Society | Liberty and justice for all United States persons abroad Some people have tried to dig into it to get the real numbers but it's a can of worms. Just seems grossly under reported.

Even if the number of citizenship renunciations are much higher it's still a tiny fraction of the population. Of course, it is also the wealthier people doing it since the masses of slave wages have no means to do so. So the impact and drain brain could end up being significant.

Makes no difference to the masses. They are trapped.

Like a couple people mentioned, it's already too late for most people. You need a second passport before you relinquish. Except for a couple of high priced special situations that takes years to get.

Ever more draconian measures are moving into place to prevent you from fleeing. A couple of them mentioned above. Also some really bizarre exit taxes are already being applied to some people. So even you ballers probably won't be able to flee in the near future.
