Damn as if we don't already have enough bad karma from this niche.

?Superfood? Promoted on Oprah?s Site Robs Amazon Poor of Staple - Bloomberg.com

May 14 (Bloomberg) -- Rising U.S. sales of acai, a purple Amazon berry promoted as a “superfood” on Oprah Winfrey’s Web site, are depriving Brazilian jungle dwellers of a protein-rich nutrient they’ve relied on for generations.
U.S. consumers are turning a “a typical poor people’s food into something like a delicacy,” said Oscar Nogueira, who specializes in the fruit at Embrapa, Brazil’s agricultural research company.

Hmmm seemed like a very poorly researched and written article to me.

Acai is stimulating the economy and making the "poor farmers" as rich as fuck. Also since it doesn't destroy the trees it's actually saving the rainforest from being cut down for Hearts of Palm etc.

In the end it should do more good than harm if companies don't bring in too many machines and shit.

Anything to make the white man feel guilty.

how can they run out of berries its all fucking jungle down there?

Tropical soil is very poor in nutrients, the tropical ecosystem relies on everything around it in real time. So when the uneducated farmers come and plow away all the trees, ferns, moss, algea, etc etc etc, they're essentially rendering the soil useless for farming without some kind of additive (which they don't have often).

Most companies don't keep things grown in their natural format, often they find it more efficient to strip an area of land, and plant them in rows and such to make them more quickly harvested and transported out.

I live in brazil, thats a load of bullshit. Sell em berries, soon well be bigger than USA (and not in body fat)

So by exporting agricultural goods, increasing their balance of trade and maximizing their natural resources, that is bad for poor people?

The economic ignorance promoted by financial media like the FT and Bloomberg is disgusting. Are they trying to compete with CNBC?

Governments shit massive amounts of waste in corruption, militarism and social engineering. THAT makes people poor.

Less government, wealthier society.

I'm sure that they are getting good money for it. They could eat something else. Brazil is actually a leading exporter of coffee, soy beans, orange juice, beef etc
