Hey guys

I was wondering what's the best degree to pursue if I want to learn web development and software programming. Preferably one that has good commercial value as well. Anyone has any ideas?
I have done A level in purely commerce subjects, no science. I am currently studying chartered accountancy but after getting into Internet marketing, I feel I should change my field because I am getting bored of accounting and think I'd be better off learning how to program.

Please give suggestions.

well i am not sure if you understand. I want it as a career. I mean I want to have a career that revolves around web development and software development so what degree would be the best to have?

Don't get a degree. Get out and learn. Engage people. Network. Build expertise. Learn processes and software.

You don't need a degree in this business. Formal education has always been pretty useless in real world commerce and production.

If you can't self-start and self-educate, you will struggle to be successful online regardless of how many university or college credentials you acquire.

As mentioned by adultstore, chances are quite good that you can hypothetically teach everything yourself. Thus I would make the decision purely based on networking / reputation factors. If you want to make it big in the tech world living near the valley won't hurt your future career path...

thanks for the suggestion guys but I don't just want to be successful online, I want it as a full-fledged career too. Can anyone here who has a degree in web development or software engeering tell me what it's like, money wise.

if i taught myself, i wouldnt be able to land a web/software development job in a company just in case my IM ventures go tits up, would I?

If you knew what you were doing you would be able to land a job..

You can always get a CS degree though if you want to work in a different industry. But then, why are you even here posting?

No one gives a shit about a degree. Everyone has a fucking degree.

What matters is who you know, what you know and how hard you're willing to work. That degree is going to be a lot of wasted time and money.

It's not a guarantee or a safety net.

Okay first if you didn't start teaching yourself to program at a young age goto school. It will help you in the long run more than listening to people here OMG OMG OMG TEACH YOUR SELF. That's generally horrible information if you actually want to go get a job in the real world. If you want to work for yourself and you don't care if your code sucks donkey dick for the first 5 years then teach yourself.

I've had self taught people work great under me and I've had them completely fail. They fail at a higher rate than people that are formally taught. You can get a job if your self taught, but be prepared to work for $10/hr, because that's what you're code will be worth.

If you don't get your degree then go get certifications - cheaper and more relevant than a formal education.

That way you at least have a piece of paper/resume fluff to show that you know what a programming language is.

FWIW: I have a CS degree
