I want to eliminate any unnecessary work or setbacks in optimizing datafeeds for various partners/comparison sites.

So far, Magento seems to be the best ecomm platform to use, and combine that with SingleFeed.

Any input?

I work with around 6 stores in Magento. It's a great platform, but getting support is a problem.

We have a few custom installations that have given us problems in the past. Nothing absolutely major, but it's something to be aware of.

I would still recommend it.

Can you get the basic Magento and add the custom stuff yourself or do you have to buy the expensive package to make it worth getting?

It's only slow if you don't get a host that's configured properly for it (and in that case it's slow as shit). It needs a pretty specific setup, but once you're on that it sings. I like these guys:

Crucial Web Hosting

+1 for prestashop
version 1.4 is just around the corner.
singlepage checkout,integrated API,memcached support....
possibly every module you ever want in the default install
strong community going,active forums

need to check out magento thou, who knows it might be even better

Product import and update speed in Magento is prohibitive to say the least due to their EAV architecture. How many products are you planning to manage?
