I'm in need of a tool to edit and create images. Which one(s) have you tried and recommend?

I use Macromedia Suite which includes Dreamweaver and Fireworks, a photo editing software. It's not as popular as Photoshop, but works seamlessly with Dreamweaver and it does what I need to do suitably.

Depending on what you want to do, there are often "lite" versions of Photoshop (can't be bothered to look up the name right now ..LE I think?)

Most things to be done with private pictures or web work can be done with that.

If you're in the market for a scanner, look for bundles.

I use The Gimp. Not going to work in a professional design setting but gets the job done for me. Did I mention it was free?

I've heard good things about gimp, haven't tried it though. Personally I use photoshop and fireworks.

They're pretty similar, but each one has it's own strengths in certain situations.

I'd shop around for a used version of either software. If you can get a recent version of macromedia studio for cheap then the dreamweaver/fireworks combo is a pretty sweet set up.

I've used PhotoShop for years. I've tried fireworks and some others but I'd never give up on PhotoShop. But I agree that its pricey.

Depending on your use and your ethics the latest version of PhotoShop is available on the torrent sites. I never buy programs for my personal computers i.e. from home. Now while I'm at work thats a different story but for my laptop, or my wife's laptop and things its always the torrent downloads.

Photoshop all the way here too. Been using it for 11+ years and it is still the best. The only thing I find lacking in it is good vector-style drawing tools for creating shapes.

As far as cheaper alternatives, I'd vote for Paint Shop Pro.

Hey, who else here remembers the good ol' "Deluxe Paint" for the Amiga 500? :D It was awesome for its time. It took almost 10 years for PCs to be able to do something comparable. Amigas ruled in the late 80's. :)
