My son came home from school today and was going on about some "Pod Cast" thing. Naturally I assumed he was possessed by the devil and gave him 30 lashings.

In your opinion is this ample punishment? What is the appropriate amount of beatings for talking nonsense?

Only you as his father can determine proper disciplinary actions. He is at a vulnerable point in his life. It is critical you put him on the right track.
