The author sounds like an angry kid who's feeling rejected by his friends/family because he wants to be different. Of course "sheeple" have passions - though for many of them, it will be "boring" things like home, family, religion, community, etc. Of course they're useful. Who else is going to keep the roads paved, the lights on, the primary care clinics staffed, and so on...? And does he really think all the wildly different and creative types are the ones filling (most of) the military?
There are plenty of reasons to "feel sorry" for normal people if you're the kind of person who enjoys feeling sorry for people. Then again, there are just as many reasons to be jealous of them.
