I have recently sold my mortgage and small loan offices for a considerable profit. I had planned to take a few years off and really get into IM. I currently make about 100k a year in IM but seem to be stuck at that position in earnings. My friend recomended me to a high up at AT&T for a senior level internet marketing position with the company.

For shit and giggles I went on the interview. I never in a million years thought about working for someone else much less working in a corporate environment. Well I got the call today from the regional manager offering me the top position in the region. The pay is 150k, company car and full benefits.

This offer is very tempting but what should I do? I havent worked for anyone but myself in over 10 years. The main pull for me is that I would get some great experience in SEO and PPC that most would only dream of. What would you guys do in my situation? I really don't need the money but I think the experience would help me with my IM ventures in the future.

worst-case milk it.. 150k and a full benefits in a senior position sound like a pretty good deal and best part is if you hate it you can walk away at any moment so why not give it a try might love it might hate it either way you win

Don't do it. The idea of working for some company makes me want to vomit.. You can take the time you spend working for that company, and make a lot more on your own in IM.

Fuck taking the deal.

Here's how I see it:

Pros of Corporate Job:
- An extra 50k a year.
- A "company" car.
- Extra benefits.
- Secure.

Pros of IM job:
- Make a 100k/yr without "really getting into"
- Could potentially dramatically increase income once "really getting into" it
- Work your own hours
- Don't answer to anyone
- Flexible with what ventures you want to get into
- Troll on WF as much as you like
- Work naked

Cons of corporate job
:
- Suck corporate cock
- 9-5 yum yums
- Get that suit on
- Have no choice who you hang out with for a large part of your week.
- Can't hit the clubs during the week without guilt.

Cons of IM job:
- No company car
- Not entirely secure

How do you want to live your life?

You wont like it, I tried.
The hours, the lock down, i went crazy.
Since your have mortgage experience you should start a short sale negotiation company thats hot right now.

unless you're tired of the business on mind 24/7 and need some time to just do the 9-5 come home and forget about it.

Rule #1 - Everyone is self employed

If you havent noticed corporate jobs are not "secure" either.

I had a similar job working for SBC/Pacific Bell years ago (but they sure as hell didn't pay me $150k)... I hated it.

I can't imagine anyone who has worked for themselves enjoying a 9-5 job working for someone else.

I'd do it, take what you learn and apply it part time to your own business. Can you handle IM and the job?

If you don't need the money and don't think you would like working for someone else, don't do it.

If you make that much from IM and it's all Google, then take it. never know when they want to get slap-happy again. I agree with the lure of working for yourself but in this economy things could change in a moments notice.

You could always quit when they get all corporate on your ass.

Hey,

(Off Topic)

I'm about to float GoldBag.com on the small cap stock exchanges.

See: Design 12

I'm currently looking for someone capable to help operate that company, on some sort of profit share system + salary.

The job involves:

* Managing CPA campaigns
* Managing TV ad campaigns
* Public Relations..

And gritty stuff like...

* Custome support
* Sending payments
* Some accounting.

It is based in Dallas, Texas though.

Let me know if you'd have any interest.

Thanks

doing seo and/or ppc for a company is the last thing i dream of. if you make 100k/yr w/ ppc/seo now, it puzzles me why you would consider working for someone else instead of investing more time into what's already making you profits...

Possibly the best perk.

You're probably going to hate it after having been self-employed for so long. But if you're going to take it, do so for the networking opportunities. Don't do it for fear of what the economy might do, or for the extra $50k and company car.

Either that, or do what you originally planned with the added bonus of knowing you've got your IM shit straight enough to get a job with a big company like that. Building your own empire will pay off more in the long run than an extra bit of cash.

What makes you think that a senior internet marketing position at ATT that pays $150k will be a 9 to 5 job? My guess is that you will be in that office well after 5 pm and still have the job on the mind when you go home. When you are an IM if you don't feel like working, you don't. It is your personal bankroll that is affected. When you work for a publicly traded company, you have others to answer to and you not feeling like working don't work for them - trust me. So are there plenty of perks that come with a corporate job - heck yes! But they come with a lot of responsbility to others as well. Just keep that in mind.
