Ok...So i got the HTC Evo about two weeks ago, the day it came out. It's a nice phone and all but really I cannot see why everyone is saying android > iOS...I had an iPhone before this phone, 3G, and I really enjoyed it...this phone, hardware wise is at least 4 times better, but it's not THAT much faster...also I'm not a fan of the android layout. I hate the keyboard, and every keyboard I've tried so far. Yes the iPhone doesn't allow you to tweak and customize it, But to be honest I never really wanted to. I jailbroke the phone to run a simple app so that it would lock the rotation. Other than that I didn't want to change anything. The only reason I switched was because AT&T made me, their coverage actually got worse from when I first got the phone, and I couldn't talk on the phone for more than 5 minutes without a call being dropped. and the data network was always overwhelmed.

So I guess what I'm really trying to say is, what is it that makes everyone like android, cause to me so far it isn't that great. Its not bad, but I enjoyed the iPhone a lot more. What makes android great to you? Because I'm not going back to AT&T, and won't even try tmobile.

Most of the people who love android and hate apple do so for one of two reasons:

1. Theyve never actually used an iphone for any extended period of time
2. They're more against Apple because of their draconian policies and "fanboi" image.

Idk I really feel like Android and iPhone are extremely similar. TBH, most of them have the same or similar apps, and all of the same features on the phone.

Ive used the iPhone for years and just got the EVO. The bottom line is that they are both great devices. They have their pros and cons, you just have to figure out which 1 is best for you.

for me personally the EVO's large screen and voice to text recognition on android is much better than apples and that's why i like the EVO better. if i'm away from the office i have to administer a website, I want the largest screen possible. i'm dictating this post right now with the voice to text recognition. not having to type all of this shit in is very nice.

I'm at a crossroads, get the iPhone 4G, or go android. Sigh, probably will just get iphone 4.

yeah, I'm not saying I don't like this phone...it's just that a lot of people make android seem like the super OS...kinda like people do for linux to i guess :/... I'm going to stick with android...so it's not like im complaining...just looking for something that maybe i'm missing out on?...and the android mail apps suck. If ATT had even decent coverage in my area it would be no question to get the new iphone...But it doesn't...so android it is...

I have an android phone (HTC incredible) and love it. However, the reason I bought the incredible instead of the iPhone is simply because I am on verizon and it costs a ridiculous amount of money to exit a contract. In many ways, the iPhone is better. If I was starting from scratch with no network, I would probably go the ATT/iPhone route. Here are the pros/cons of both as I see them:

HTC Incredible/Android - PROS:
Great phone. Fast, 8mp camera.
Android is great and can pretty much do anything
Verizon. Verizon is the best network, period. I get reception EVERYWHERE, even on the subway sometimes.

HTC Incredible/Android - CONS:
The Android market is relatively small compared to the app store. This will change once more developers come to android, however.

iPhone - PROS:
Huge app store
iPhone 4 is about to be sick - video chatting specifically.

iPhone - CONS:
ATT sucks, lets be honest. Dropped calls, poor service..

One thing I've noticed on my Incredible is the amount of apps that build up and start taking up some processing power. That's why I installed advanced task manager to kill everything once it builds up. If you want to compare apples to apples the Evo wins on paper stacked up against the new Iphone.

As far as Android as a whole I think it's going to blow away the iphone store in about 6 months. Since Android is pretty much an open platform it's going to attract way more developers. Below are the features I like about the Android on my Incredible.

- Speech to text is awesome
- Google GPS
- Google Voice
- Ability to expand the memory on almost all the phones
- Ability to change the battery

The GPS on my phone is better than my Garmin. I know there's a couple GPS apps for the iphone but I doubt they are as good. I have used both devices but I think Android will definitely pull ahead in the app game in the near future. Both phones operate damn near identical. I also love the HTC touch flow on my phone.

Yeah, the EVO (maybe all Android 2.1 devices, I don't know) has built in turn by turn navigation. Just speak your destination and it does the rest.

Again, it's not like either one is remarkably better than the other.

I hate how tightly Apple controls everything but that has it's benefits in a very efficient and stable system.

If iPhone 4 had a larger screen I probably would have waited to get it instead of the EVO.

Maybe by the time I'm sick of Sprint Apple will release an iPhone with a larger screen.

iphone is coming to verizon very soon.

There was no other reason for AT&T to offer the $199 purchase price to customers 6 months+ into their 2 year contracts except to lock all the suckers in to Shitty&T right before verizon starts offering the iphone.

These phones are running 1ghz+ CPU's.. something would have to be majorly wrong for it *not* to be fast

The speed issues are because of java... or rather a derivative of java (Dalvik VM) that android is using. Most of the core OS is native compiled C but a lot of the top layer of the OS that interacts with applications is still java. Over time more and more of the OS/VM layer is being converted to native code. Google wrote their own Dalvik VM from scratch as a java container. It's currently no where near as good at optimising code as the Sun JRE. It was a big job just to get it built and stable so I guess optimization was meant to be a second phase. But they are working on it and it's being tweaked to include more an more code optimization so I think there'll be significant improvements. I can see the difference running the same code on a 1.5 Vs as 2.1 android.

You do realize that AT&T and Apple signed an exclusivity deal (5yrs) until 2012?

For me, android means custom roms (customized builds of the android source), such as how I'm sporting Cyanogenmod 5.0.7 (android 2.1) long before Tmobile will ever get 2.1 out officially on their devices. I still use my ipod touch on occasion as a portable gaming device since aside from a few small titles there's still really nothing to match the level of games and graphics as found on even my first generation ipod touch. For everything else I prefer my android.

PS: The same 2.1 eclair rom I'm sporting on my MyTouch 3G Limited Edition, also works for the G1, and Cyanogen even announced that Froyo 2.2 will also be available for the G1 and newer soon as he gets the source. So already got 2.1 out before tmobile, and will likely have 2.2 support on tmobile's line of phone before tmobile can even get 2.1 or 2.2 out.
