What's the joke about being an Amazon Associate?

I just read a blog where someone pretty successful was selling something through an Amazon link and a reader commented that he thought it was pretty funny that the guy was even a member of Amazons Associate program. Am I missing something here? What is the joke? Is Amazon not a good seller to partner with?

Thanks,
Trav

The joke is you will have to go on welfare to supplement their income.

Fucking .00000005% commissions I assume is the joke.

Hmmm...I thought it was like 4% commissions at least? I know that still sucks but I guess there are better places that pay much higher commissions to do business with? But where can I find them?

It could be a 4% commission on a $1,000 high def plasma TV or some shit. In which case it's a nice $40. You obviously don't want to promote books and CDs and other low ticket item crap. Unless it's simply your supplement income or spammy auto generated sites.

I know people who make a killing on Amazon.

Yes very very long time ago... When DP was a good place to hangout. And Jon was promoting Clickbank products.

To the OP:
Any commission is good, as long as the commission covers for traffic acquisition cost.

Of course, if you have free traffic, and you only sell books... or even some electronic gadgets, it is pretty cool. because Amazon has a lot of products that ranks "one" in price points, and their free shipping for orders above $25 is very good.

If you have a camera review site, with organic traffic, then Amazon is good. But I doubt if it will give you more income than even adsense on a cam site. or usb stick review site.. Amazon has the best deals on USB stick. :)

You said you were giving up and leaving. It's not cool to post a thread saying that and still stick around. It makes people not believe what you say.

But yes, as has been pointed out - Amazon is okay, if you do a store-type of site where you have a ton of similar products.

I use them on some auto blogs.

I make some money through Amazon every month. Not enough to put much time into it, but it's easy to throw up a shitty autoblog and not worry about writing real reviews or anything because a lot of people search for the specific product name already with the intent to buy, so they click right through your site to Amazon, have a look around and then buy it. So if you want to just throw up a few crap Amazon splogs every day you can make money. But you're not building any skills doing that.

I prefer to build skills! How can I do it??

I never said I was giving up anything. I never said I was leaving. I posted that I was walking away and I posted a link to a song called Walking Away. Learn to read between the lines.

And for you other wannabe AM's who are suggesting I slap up some shit sites to promoto Amazon products, that right there is the sole reason you are not making more money. Because you don't care or try hard enough. Put some blood, sweat, and tears along with some 'give a shit' into your campaigns and the rewards will follow.

Lot of high price things on Amazon to sell, expensive watches, jewelry, handbags. Even 3 or 4% commission is a pretty good sale.

Now if your selling lightbulbs, toilet paper, or zhuzhu pets, probably not worth the time. (unless you have insane volume)

I really want to see you succeed, and all these assholes here are just egging you on. Here's a good explanation video on how to get started with the Amazon Associates program. If you like this video, this guy has several others that are more in depth which I found very helpful when starting out.

Amazon is all about volume. The more items you sell, the higher commission percentage you get. Doesn't matter if it's a pen or a computer. Amazon has worked very hard to maximize conversions, take advantage of it.
