What's the point of scraping? Or what is it?

I have a vague understanding that scraping is related to having content automatically copied/pasted or taken from certain websites. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But, why do affiliates need scraping and how many different ways do they use it?

Scraping is a broad term - it usually refers to gathering data for one of several reasons.

For example - people scrape the yellow pages online to create databases of businesses by time. You want a db of all of the golf courses in the country? There's a database for sale for that (on here somewhere I believe).

When it comes to content scraping, people do it so they don't have to come up with their own content.
Once they have articles sourced from somewhere else, they'll mechanically or manually add spinning syntax to it so that it's altered enough to no longer resemble the original article as well as provide several other articles that are similar.

This in turn can be used on one's own site or in article marketing in order to sell a product directly, or drive more traffic to your money site.

Scraping, as it's usually referred to in this industry, is scripts created for the sole purpose of pulling data from websites usually on a large scale. You could scrape google results for a specific niche for prime link spamming, you could scrape videos on youtube for your site in a specific niche, you could scrape keywords to load into an advertising platform, you could scrape ads in a certain demographic to "model" after...there's really and endless amount of things you could do with a good scraper.
