What's your views on taking .net .org when your site is a .com?

I have an established magazine site, the domain name is short and not a keyword. It's not something somebody would type in by accident so my initial thoughts were that the only people typing in my domain are already users of my site so they know it's the .com.

I've not bothered to buy any other variations on my name although all are available.

What is everyone's views on this? If it was a keyword I would have done so but it's equivalent to 'DWaving.com' i.e. not a work but rather a word with a preceeding letter. (That's not my domain)

I suppose it all depends on how valuable one particular property is to you. Eventually, someone will try to rip-off/duplicate almost anything generating significant traffic. If this is a long-term project for you, buying a few extra domains is cheap insurance. If it's a pump and dump or a flip, it's not worth it.

From the sounds of your post, you're looking to develop this site for a while. It doesn't cost much to snag a few extra TLDs.

Yes you're quite right it's a long term love of mine. Cheers dude I think that's sound advice.

Only haven't done it so far cos the costs don't half add up when you're doing that regularly. However, you're quite right it's worth it for this one.

And somebody did already try and rip off my site, he bought the long tail name of my site in the .com and using some spooky blackhat shit managed to outrank me for the first 3 months without any updated content at all.

I think it's a good idea to grab the .net and the .org
You can build secondary projects on those (example: a community/forum on .net and a foundation/charity on .org) if you have a really large site.

If you're planning on making significant money from the site, or if the domain name is a brand, it's probably a good idea to grab the .orgs and .nets, especially because domains are dirt cheap. Hell, don't even host them. Just keep them in your possession and you get really big, you can even flip them down the line. Imagine how much CNN.net could have been sold for? ;)

I agree with the the poster above. If you're planning to brand it, then get the .org and .net as well.

From my experience, it is a real hassle later on. I have this project on my hands where there client wants to sue a person who is holding a domain which we need and doesn't want to sell it.

It's all about protecting your brand ! I would shell out less than $100 and register all the good extensions. It's always a good investment to protect your brand.

I suppose , If you really think that your business would give that much awareness , then you shall go with other extension of the websites.

For the most part, I don't think the .net and .orgs are necessary unless your site is an exact match keyword, where someone else could register those for the same SEO boost you're getting.

That changes if this is one of your primary sites though. It's better safe than sorry, I guess.

I've had plenty of people try to rip off my EMD sites such that I always buy the .net/.org. However, my biggest site isn't a keyword rich domain and I've never bothered with the .net/.org and never had a problem with it. If anything, the only problem I had with that site was someone regging the EMD for one of my big keywords and trying to usurp me on google for that 1 keyword.

The other TLDs are not necessary because your actual domain is a .com. Even if you purchase them and redirect them to your web-site, do add a message like "you have been redirected to...." so that they do not keep coming to the wrong extension.

My views are completely identical to his. you must buy .net .org .info, not because they can be a problem to you, but because they are dirt cheap. (1and1.com )

Get the .net/.org and build a "fan site" dedicated to your magazine, or even a simple page with a list of links to your most recent articles.

Like others have said, if you will spend a lot of effort and money building a unique brand then probably a good idea. Otherwise it is just too expensive in my opinion. There are so many other domain extensions now, you could never buy them all.
