I'm not talking Craigslist accounts, I've been using answer posting sites to help get my website promoted, but they started requiring phone verified accounts.

Where can you get US phone numbers that you can just use for a simple and quick verification process and then be done with them?

Skype online number. Not free, but way cheaper than any of the ripoff international call redirection services with hidden charges.

Second vote for Twilio. If you are from outside of the US, you can either pay international rates to redirect the call to your phone (about the same pricing as Skype international calls), redirect your Twilio numbers to a US Skype number, or send calls to a Google Voice phone number answered through gmail.

Detecting if a # is VOIP is pretty easy for compliance (I know we audit for that at EWA, and it is def. a mark against the account getting approved if they do apply with a VOIP line).

Does Twilio use a known carrier? For instance, sites like askville.com require that you enter in what carrier your phone number is. If the carrier isn't on their list, it won't work.

Twilio doesn't use any cell provider that would be on a standard "carrier selection" list - numbers are through Level3 and Bandwidth.com.
