Is anywhere cheaper than godaddy?

...and reliable and not some shady company that may not be around in 6 months?

I have many sites with godaddy already but they are expensive to renew at.

Or is the best way to do it just to renew when you have big coupon codes?

Who do you use?

I have used namecheap in the past and they are on my NO NEVER AGAIN list. They are not an ICANN accredited registrar. They are actually a reseller for eNom, so when you do a whois it shows it’s registered through eNom.
When you do anything there it has to get passed on to eNom and I experienced delays and failures of that to work. When you register a domain there, if somebody registers it elsewhere before they pass the information to eNom, you are out of luck.

My recommendation is name.com. I have been using them for about three years and never had any problems. I have used nodaddy, namecheap and netfirms in the past and now have my 50+ domains at name.com
.com: $7.39 transfers $8.49 new and renewals free privacy with a coupon code. "FREEWHOIS"
The only caveat there is that their support and billing people only work daytime Colorado MST 5 days, so if you are doing anything out of the ordinary or if you are new and paying with a credit card (especially if out of the USA/Canada) get things done Mon-Fri.
 
I would recommend you to check out hostgator as nothing is better than that at the moment . They are provding quality service at a reasonable price, I am using their services for my websites and I am really satisfied
