Which KWs do you SEO?

Ok, so say you're putting up a new site and you're gonna target 3 KWs - one KW, then 2 more longer-tail versions of the last. Example:

KW1 = red widgets = 30k global exact/month
KW2 = buy red widgets = 10k global exact/month
KW3 = how to buy red widgets = 3k global exact/month

Competition for KW1 is the toughest, then down to KW3, but isn't commensurate with the searches. In other words, KW1 gets 10x the searches KW3 does, but the competition isn't 10x as bad. Say 1/3 - 1/2 that. You're gonna put a bunch of content on the TLD - 4k+ words, several posts, etc.

Which KW do you focus your SEO efforts on? Do you focus on KW1 as it's the biggest, and then let the others fall into place, or focus on KW3, as it contains KW1 anyway, thereby all your SEO efforts will contain KW1 anyway?

Obviously you want to go after all 3. Content will revolve around and be LSI for all 3. When building large numbers of backlinks (think like Social Bookmarking Bomb or elquid's 30k blog comments), you use all 3 KWs. But when you have to choose just one (say deciding which KW to enter into a plugin like SEOpressor to optimize on-page or when buying expensive high PR blogrolls), which one do you prefer to go for? Buying the domain is the same thing - no matter which one you choose, it's gonna have to be KW + stop letter or stop word.

I've seen it done both ways, and have actually done it both ways myself (though that was on accident, lol). Normally, I'd think that conventional wisdom says focus on KW1, but after reading Jbern's case study in the new Enlightened Members area, I'm wondering.

What do you guys tend to do?

Jon focused on PPC in that thread and you are here talking about SEO. You should focus on KW1 for sure.

What do you mean by "focus"? If you mean investing 80% of the time and money on that keyword until you're #1, I think that's wrong.

KW1 gets to be in the domain.
kw2 and kw3 will be linked sitewide.
It's a lot easier to climb the serps for kw1 when you're high for the other kws. Also, we can assume that kw2 and kw3 will convert better, so higher ROI and faster ranking.

Build high quality links to the domain, spam the shit out of kw2 and kw3, get to #1-2, make the monies and invest them back into kw1. ranking for kw3 should give you nice cash flow to play with and rank the other two kws.

This. SEO isnt PPC. You need to be focusing on more than 1 keyword. Your site shouldn't be a 1 page lander.
