Wow... WF is still around. It's been a few years. I saw I only had 3,999 posts and felt like making that a nice even number. I recognize like two names on the active list. I guess everyone got rich and moved to Thailand.

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a long, long time. What's next? Nacho dog fake wig avatars?

Seems to me people started leaving the industry once they realized it got harder to make a quick buck. I think it's still nice though, also personally I don't read any other forums anymore or industry blogs - just wickedire all day erry day

I guess some of you are still around. I never hated WF, I just hated a good portion of the people who I had to deal with during my web hosting days (who came from here). What a pain in the ass.

Believe it or not, I work at Google now. I was checking out some Google Domains stuff and it made me think of this place. In fact, there were a few people around here who knew their python/linux/networking/etc... If you're still around and sick of working at McDonald's, hit me up. :P

Doing what at Google?

Your mistake was charging $2 and selling to non-techy people who heard stories of online money and decided to max out their credit cards on ppc campaigns and agressive link building services/scripts.

If you sell cheap hosting to people who don't even know how to use FTP and hog up a bunch of resources you're gonna have a bad time

I'm at the data center in Council Bluffs. Official title is Operations Engineer. There's a lot opportunity for people with a strong Linux background right now. Bonus points if you can code in Python or Go.

I need to learn how to code, or want to anyway. So many people looking for programmers these days. Fucking coding school just opened up 2 minutes from my house, too bad it's for "kids and teens"

I find it interesting that people with information like here about financial independence, being your own boss etc get a job... obviously you had some drive to make it on your own with the hosting? I can imagine working at google has its own perks, so how do these two opposite concepts of being business oriented and being employed work out for you?

Being your own boss is awesome, but it comes with a ton of sacrifices. You work 24/7 and everything is on you. Sometimes it really is just a bad time and you find yourself wondering if it's worth it (no matter how much money you make). Of course, I'm talking from an online service standpoint.

However, no matter how much it sucks, it's a million times better than most 9-5 jobs. Most. There are maybe five companies in the world that I would give up everything to work for and Google is at the top of that list. At Google, money isn't an issue for me anymore. The perks are ridiculous. And to top it off, I work with the most state of the art stuff on the plant. I have no boss hovering over me telling me what to do... I have complete freedom to work on the projects I want to work on... and I'm constantly learning new things. But the best part? No outside clients to worry about. All of that and I actually have a life now.

Hey Subigo!

Why can't I disable mod_security on my $1/month shared account? Sure I might have 20 auto blogs with outdated wordpress and plug in versions... but I MUST DO THIS. Also, I can't believe you are putting me through this peasnat shit of capping outgoing emails to 500/hour. And if you don't allow it, I'm going to destroy your reputation because I am... SUPER ANNOYING CLIENT.

I'm sure you are extra happy to work at G after reading that.

Congrats on the job, if I wanted to take a regular 9-5, G would be it. Hope you have a good time and network.

Maybe a couple of years from now we'll be reading about a Googler who left with 5 co-workers to start the next big thing on a VC investment. Hopefully it won't involve razor thin margins and dealing with online douches.
