Here's the deal.
Make one of these.

If you haven't ever made one of these this is what you should do.
Print the pattern.
Tape it to your pumpkin, you might have to make cuts in the non image area to help it lay flat.
Next take a small nail and push it in a little about every 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch along all lines, closer together on curves.
After you have ALL lines transfered to your pumpkin carefully remove the pattern, you may need it to refer to while cutting.
Start cutting, cut out the eyes and mouth, the areas of the pattern that indicate to cut all the way through.
The next part is trickier, I've never done this type of work before so you may have to use your best judgement. Cut part way throuh where indicated. I'd guess you don't want to go through more than a quarter inch or so, definately not more than half the thickness of the pumpkin. The idea here is to pass some light through these areas.
The areas of the pattern that indicate don't cut are areas where the surface of the pumpkin should remain.
With some skill and luck it should look somewhat similar to the one above.
