Got some inspiration for a new business idea, now I've been workin my ass off for the last 8 hours.. gonna keep this going through the night.

Anyone else pullin an all-nighter or found some inspiration recently and finally go excited about their businesses again? Feels great.

Thankfully, being tired is no longer an issue thanks to:

Thanks "doctor" for the 60 10mg adderalls a month. You help make work even more enjoyable.

I do it every now and then, not too often though - leads to burn out.

Next time will probably be during the next Ludum Dare this month.

Right there with you, happens about once or twice a week. In the midst of a 10 minute break then back at it.

Coffee + KB helps here too.

I've not done an all-nighter in years, because I realised it was stupid and hindered productivity in the long run.

The only reason to do an all-nighter is when you've got something that has to be done by tomorrow. Regularly getting into these situations suggests your business is poorly organised, or you suck at time management.

The sooner the western world can stop glorifying long working hours, the sooner we can all live better, more productive lives. My facebook is full of "I've worked 80 hours this week!" etc. Ah excellent, you must have a great job, be working hard and you're going to have a great career. How inspiring.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't work hard, but that they should work smarter. If you're working 80 hour weeks, having all-nighters on the regular, etc, then you're holding your business back. You're not delegating enough, not profiting enough for the hours you put in or are just bad at managing time.

More hours = more progress is one of the most corrosive myths of business.

Speak for yourself there. It's about finding a pattern that works for you. If that one works for you, good for you, keep it up. But you can't make this blanket statement generalizing it will apply to everyone.

Da Vinci's polyphasic sleep patterns were well known and it worked out pretty good for him, as did for Thomas Jefferson at some point.

Bottom line, do what works for you.

Sure, that's not what I'm talking about though.

I'm talking about people that just don't have a sleeping pattern. I shouldn't have generalised, you're right. What I'm referring to are people that'll stay up for 48 hours, then sleep for 6, and think they're performing at the top of their game still (they're not, no matter how convinced they are they're being super productive).

Basically, you need enough sleep and enough time to also "get away" from work and think.

Most people have their best ideas when they're well rested, relaxing or doing something totally away from work. By working huge numbers of hours every week, neglecting sleep and establishing a poor routine, you destroy any creativity you may have, and the only road you'll go down is one finishing in burnout.

I inferred this from the OP's post, incidentally, as he was staying up all-night (implying he has a monophasic sleep pattern, or it wouldn't be relevant), and taking adderall to do it. That's not a good thing to be doing on a regular basis, or to be proud of. We're biologically wired to have rhythm in our lives. The more you try to work against it, the less able to do your best work you'll be.

anyone can pull an all nighter one time. What are you going to do with that idea tomorrow night? How about the day after? The only thing that matters is what you do from here

Congrats on your new found idea and motivation.

Work smarter not harder. You'll live longer and enjoy your time considerably more.

All nighters suck. I work 10am - 6/7pm most days. I dont work weekends anymore either. A good work/downtime mix is the way forward

I've had my shares of staying up 31+ hours and going into zombie mode. Now I have one all-nighter day followed by 2 normal working days usually 12 hours/day.

This keeps me fresh and my mind sharp.

How's that space program going over there in the UK?

I used to be that way. Now I work 9am to 2pm most days, off on weekends. Fuck that shit, there's so much more to life. Interestingly, I'm getting a lot more (work) done than I used to. All nighters = burn out, poor productivity.

I stay up 36, 48, or sometimes even 60 hours in a row probably once every three weeks or so. I normally only do it when I have a huge deadline I need to meet and unless you HAVE to get something done by a certain time an all nighter isn't worth it. Not only does is it incredibly bad for productivity in the long run but it also fucks up your sleep schedule a lot. I sleep from 9am until 4pm now because mine is so fucked up.

I no longer set deadlines that require me to be awake all night, but I do have odd sleeping patterns and I have a fair amount of dealing with people in San Fran which really fucks up my working day in London. I used to burn crazy hours when I was at a game developers and we had a milestone to make. A big bag of speed usually got my team through those nights, but I'd never choose that as a working environment again!
