Who's the user on here who owns German Shepherds and knows a lot about them?

I talked to him on Skype like a year ago or so when I first got my dog but I forget who he was.

I want to get a puppy but don't really know how to determine if any of the breeders around here are good. Was hoping to ask him. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

German shepards are honestly the greatest dog to ever exist.

Wise choice.

Yup, got one as a puppy when I was 7 or 8, we pretty much grew up together. Amazing dog, this one was very clumsy though, and not very obedient unless I had some food in hand, but I loved him very much. Lived for 12 or 13 years, and at the end of his life started having some problems with back legs, that seems quite common problem with shepherds

I have owned 4.... Our current Shepherd is from Austria. Parents are working dogs. He is a personal home dog. Not fully schutzhund trained, but *very* solid on all the basic commands as well as will stay with a family member. Can bark like crazy at someone on command, but not bite trained.

Possibly the best descendant to have come from the wolf, in my opinion.

OP, a friend who knows a great deal more than me (I want one myself) advised not to get a breed standards/show dog if you are looking for ability. Apparently a lot of the police/army dogs are Belgian x German Shepherds.

Enjoy. :) (Not jealous at all..!)

Anyone wanting a German Shepherd should stay away from show dogs. They 'tend' to be over-bred and have all kinds of different 'ticks'. HOWEVER, it all depends on the breeder and the lines.

When looking for a German Shepherd only go for one with TRUE working lines. I 'prefer' German - German Shepherds but even there you have to be CAREFUL. Lots of good Czech/Eastern European GSD's out there as well.

Police Departments are using Beligian Malinois which are a bit smaller then a regular GSD's and therefore a tad more agile. Really its personal preference.

I LOVE the look of a GSD since I've been raised with them all my live. Get a good puppy and you can look for a loyal companion that will do ANYTHING for you and be by your site no matter what.

The old adage is true though - a dog will ALWAYS be a direct reflection of his owner. Show me a screwed up dog - and I show you a screwed up owner 99% of the time.

Especially when it comes to German Shepherds.

I have two Malinois and they are the best damn watch dogs ever. Very bright, super obedient and very chilled out without being lazy dogs. I have two pitbulls as well and though I love my pb's they are much more neurotic than the Malinois, the pits bark at everything and everyone but my Mallys only bark when someone is at the gate. Smart fucking dogs. I can tell by their bark whether it's a stranger outside or someone they know whereas the PBs act as if the neighborhood kids playing ball in the street are the fucking Taliban. I wait til the Mallys bark to look outside.

They are incredibly loyal. I loaned one to a friend of mine for a week once, her home was broken into and she was scared to be alone. While she was at work my Malinois tunneled under her fence and took off. She called me when she realized the dog was gone and I went searching, was really bummed. Two hours later I had given up and headed home to find my dog sitting patiently outside my gate waiting to be let in. Smart fucking dogs.
