Why does the my local government have the power to compel me to remove snow....

...from the sidewalk around my property?

I don't own the sidewalk. I can't even order people not to loiter in front of my house should they choose to do so.

So why should I have to remove snow from it?
 


I guess its called taking responsibility for your village. They could raise taxes and plow the sidewalks i suppose.

I understand the justification and even the benefits. What I don't understand is the legality of making people maintain public property.

I think its similar to having to mow the lawn that isnt technically on the owners property.
 
but then who becomes liable if someone slips on your portion of the walkway?

The right of way is 60' on center, 30' from the center-line of the road. City ordinances or township ordinances generally define homeowner responsibilities to include: snow removal from sidewalks, sidewalk repairs, grasscutting, maintaining a clear walkway,ect.

NOW GO SHOVEL YOUR DAMN WALKWAY AND STOP BEING A DOUCHE.

Because the old fucks who walk it daily, attend the city council meetings and make a huge fucking uproar about people not shoveling their sidewalks.. It becomes a major pain in the ass of the council and they mandate it, to shut them up.
