Last week, the grandmother that helped raised me passed away from emphysema. She was a tough old German lady that taught me many lessons about life when I was growing up.

So to cheer me up, a couple of friends of mine called me up to take my girlfriend and I fishing since they knew that we had both been holed up almost constantly working our asses off at our respective careers for the past few weeks and so had not done any fishing yet since the weather has been warm.

Since one of my goals this year is to buy a boat much like his, it served as even more inspiration for me to keep digging at it. I'm not motivated by money so much as I am freedom. Freedom to do things that I want to do and the freedom to have the resources to do things with and for the people that I care about.

Yeah, this is a cheeky "inspirational" thread. If you got a problem with it, bite me. :D

Anyway, here are some cool pics that we snapped while we were out.

Not thirty minutes after setting the outriggers, I grabbed the first dolphin (Mahi-mahi)

She wasn't nearly as large as my grimace lets on, but I didn't have a harness on either, so the pole was digging in my crotch. At any rate, it was the first catch of the day and it was only about 7:45!

Even though she was small, she was still pretty.

She bled like a stuck pig too.

After I put her in the cooler and reset the outriggers, it was time for the first beer of the morning and a shot of the ladies in their Navy caps.

Soon after, the lines started buzzing again and Krista (my girlfriend) jumped on it to attempt to land her very first salt water catch. Of course, I didn't want her to lose it so I lent a hand.

Krista's bringing her up to the hull to get gaffed.

And, like a good boyfriend, I do the honors; draws hanging out of my shorts and all.

Hers was a little bigger. Not too much, though.

After a while of not seeing much action, we steered the boat south for a while and the ladies caught some sun up on the bow while I caught a buzz behind the helm. And then we spotted this.

How often do you get to see a sea turtle swimming on the surface 75 miles offshore? When she lifted her head out of the water, I swear it was as big as a football.

She was just chugging along. Even when I brought the boat around to get closer she pretty much just ignored us. Probably because we were only doing around 5 knots since we were still trolling. You can even see the barnacles on her back. I figure she laid her eggs early in the season and was headed back out to sea, but I could be wrong.

We caught three dolphin in all because we missed a couple of hits. But all in all it was a pretty good day since other guys chattering on the radio were saying that they had been trolling all day with only one or even none in the cooler. Guess they just weren't hitting that great.

Me and Krista back at the dock holding our catches. We didn't weight them, but I estimate that mine was around 18 lbs and hers was about 20 lbs.

Of course, Ashley had to show us up with her 35 lbs or so bull. It's no tourney winner, but that's a nice fish!

There's nothing better than speeding out of the harbor at 4:30 am for a day on the water and drinking beer. It makes me realize that those bumper stickers on the bumpers of rednecks' trucks are really true: "A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work!"

Anyway, it's days like this that inspire me to work my ass off to reach my goals. The boat I am lusting after is much like his and costs a good bit and I still have to buy a house first so I have some work to do.

I think it would be great for others to jump in and post their inspirations as well. And if you think it's gay, well, bite me. :D

Yeah, we cooked up some good fillets that night and froze some for the parents since they haven't been out yet this year either.

And yes, nacho, they are plastic fish. That's the new style. Didn't you hear? :)

ah that's gotta be the life right there. I want to do all that. only fishing on my own replica 18th century pirate ship. yaaaaaarrr.

Good shit. Mahi Mahi or Dolphin as we say donw here is good eating.

Rock on dude, Nothing better that drinking beer and fishing.

I don't know how people that don't live near the coast can take it. I really don't. I have to be near the water or I'll go crazy. Call it some kind of weird claustrophobia, but I have to be near the water. Perhaps it was the 8 years in the Navy. Who knows?

Anyway, thanks for the compliments. Hopefully, I will have some larger trophies to show off than these this season.

In the next few months, we're going to be getting SCUBA (re) certified and trying our hand at underwater spearfishing. I'm REALLY stoked about starting that!

Nice trip bro. Glad you had some good fun to celebrate her life. This is how funerals should be.
