Why Is There No American Revolution?

Been thinking about this question since the stuff in Egypt started.

Egyptians are obviously pissed at their slave-masters (Mubarak and his cabinet). Enough so that they went to the streets to organize a revolution. It's been arguably successful since Mubarak is stepping down.

What's more, it's been pretty peaceful. The exception was the camel guys, who were pro-Mubarak. There are obvious factions.

Look at us, the Americans. We're pissed at our slave-masters, too. Sure, there are factions that are friendly toward the government, but factions exist in Egypt. And look at what the Egyptians accomplished. And with little to no violence.

So, what is it about those people that drove them to do something we're unwilling to do?

It can't be for a lack of firearms since the Egyptians lack them, too. It can't be for a lack of a communication platform, either. Are we afraid of cops and the military? Egyptians had to contend with both.

Surely, there are fat, lazy Egyptians in the same way there are fat, lazy Americans. They probably even have their own American Idol.

So, what is it? What drove them to accomplish what they did, and what prevents Americans from doing the same? Is it economic? Their unemployment rate is similar to our own.

I can't figure it out. What do you think?

Best quote I have heard in a long time came from Reddit last week. It went something like this (not exact).

In Egypt they pulled a Orwell when they should have pulled a Huxley.

I like to add to that by saying "America knows how to Huxley!"

You watch the super bowl? That was epic. Just sayin.

(Post note: Huxley = author of Brave New World, Orwell author of 1984.

Brave New World had a happy stupid society with every pleasure they wanted, mental programming and happy pills called soma.

1984 was an oppressive future where people had no rights, the government ruled over all citizens, emotions were oppressed, servitude to the state.

America today is a fine mix of big brother government control mixed with happy pills and pleasures and distractions. )

fucking exactly. no one is going to start a revolution because they are a) too retarded to and b) don't even realize that there's a problem

They've had the same president for nearly 30 years and for most of those years he was the only one on the ballot, or something like that.

40% of their population lives on $2 a day.

Because unlike Egypt we Americans have so many opportunities in life that most people in the world do not have. You can be what ever the fuck you want to in the United States. Sure we have problems but for the majority of us we will never experience any true hardship what so ever (ie. being hungry, lack of clothes, lack of shelter).

And something big would have to happen for a bloody revolution to be started. Not many people are going to risk their lives or there children's lives for something simple.

If you have ever actually traveled to Africa or the Middle East. Then you will realize how much "freedom" we actually have. And how fucking easy we have it. Could it come to a point where we are oppressed by our "slave masters"? Sure it could.

Where would the Americans park their autos if they all came out enmasse?

"What you want me to WALK to the protest???? Brotha I weigh twice what your average Egyptian weighs, I aint walking no place."

There's no obvious dictator?

You are right it's complicated here. Instead of one dictator you have lots of various corrupt government wings, companies and the media with clear conflicts of interests who are using the America people to further there own gain.

examples: wall street, banks, EPA , oil companies, the entire legislation section, congress, the courts, the fucking media/news networks etc.

We would have to tear down all of these agencies and start over fresh.

It still pisses me off that no one on Wall street has been held accountable/punished for there actions

This is much more cerebral than what I was going to say: "Because we still have the internet." If they used a kill-switch here, we'd have no choice: couldn't work, couldn't watch Netflix instant... that's how you start a revolution.

Want a complacent population? Give 'em their toys and take away freedoms slowly.

why have a revolution when you can watch one on cable? the american lifestyle doesn't permit for long-term unrest....

however, if the GOV ever screws up this lifestyle (food, travel, facebook, etc) than anything could happen.

Bread and circuses.

While I find myself swinging much further to the right (only fiscally, not religious at all) I wont risk repercussions to my children because of anything I might get outspoken about in my area, so I kind of do it through others and encouraging them or giving ideas. Though once the kids are out on their own I have a feeling I will be much more active and vocal directly.

We already revolted, and now every couple of years we get to pick and choose who represents us all levels of government, hell even the PTA and HOA boards are elected so if we don't like what our leaders are doing or the direction they're taking us we can cast our vote and kick them out of office. All without having to torch police cars or loot local businesses.

JakeStratham, I think you just want an excuse to wear a ski mask and flip over cars. Such mayhem doesn't belong in a civilized society.

Don't worry, just build your nest egg and make sure you've hedged accordingly, probably commodity heavy. You guys will have your revolution - restart this thread when US cities start declaring bankruptcy.

Because they don't want it to happen yet. Look at Denninger's math, technically our GDP should be -15%. The Republicans holding the line on spending will expose it a little, but I expect something major, a stock market crash or terrorist attack. Then the riots/revolution will come. But they don't want it here yet.
