End of the rainbow
I recently read that on a daily basis, there are now more Android-based phones sold than iPhones. On the surface it seems like the iPhone is like Internet Explorer, and within a year or two Android (Firefox et al) will take a huge share of their market.

I'm looking for a new project and I'm looking at app development, so this is just something I've been thinking about. Anyone out there develop apps and have any input on this?

I guess at this point you would still develop for the iPhone, and plan on having to develop for both iPhone and Android in the near future?

In my understanding Andorid apps are done up in Java.

Android - Google Code University - Google Code

Since Oracle took over Sun they have actually had their panties up in a bunch over Android using Java:

Oracle sues Google over Java in Android ? The Register

And if Java isn't your thing look at Appcelerator can create apps for cross platform deployment using other web technologies:

Use Appcelerator Titanium to build mobile apps for iPhone & Android and desktop apps for Windows, Mac OS X & Linux from Web technologies

As for who will out grow who, who knows. If Apple doesn't step their game up I could very well see it happening.

Thanks for the links. The 2nd one had an interesting factoid I didn't know ... according to that article Android phones already have a bigger market share than iPhone (27% vs 23%)

It will be interesting to see how many Verizon users adopt the iPhone when it comes out on the network. Also, despite market share being smaller, Apple represents the majority of industry profits (cf. Apple's Share of Mobile Phone Industry Profits Reportedly Rises to 39% - Mac Rumors).

Droid is an OS offered on multiple variations of models? Or am I wrong? Droid presence in Canada is weak. But if droids are those pieces of plastic HTC garbage then iphones will still be fine with their marketing based on scarcity and branding

"Droid" is the Android platform, some companies (like Verizon) like to re-brand them.

I've heard that Nokia is soon going to be moving into the smartphone market in a big way. They are already using intel chips in the newer models and they are opening up thier Symbiam OS so that anybody can develop apps.

They have lost a lot of marketshare in the higher end market over the past couple of years to the likes of iPhone and Blackberry, but they are still huge and have a massive sales and distribution network in place so I recon they will the ones to release the next "iPhone killer".

Might be worthwhile looking into and start developing Nokia apps now before the rush begins.

Droid still makes up a low % of mobile internet bandwidth although it is growing fast. Here as some stats from one of our mobile specific sites to give you an idea of what I see in mobile.

Browser % visits
Safari 83.25%
Mozilla 3.74%
BlackBerry8530 1.86%
BlackBerry9700 1.60%
BlackBerry9530 1.39%

For apps still iPhone is the leader in the market in you want to produce and income from it. IMO

Nokia is threatening the market with they so called "Windows Phone" I just can't wait to see a Vista trying to call emergency lol

Cheers!

Android phones will take over iphone soon, but iphone apps market is more interesting (just now).
Android will rule tablet pc apps marketplaces, the Android OS is far better than IOS and can compete with Windows 7 devices.

not really sure what you mean. I own a Nexus one (manufactured by HTC) and i haven't been treating it as well as some people treat their iphones. Still, I have no broken screen like most of my friends with an iphone do.

And it's fast as shit too with 2.2 on it.

And yes, android will overtake the iphone because you can slap it on any possible device. At least until apple doesn't have a smartphone available in the lower pricing range.

Lol, that's why I slapped my iPhone into an Otter Box the moment I bought it. No way I'm paying for that shit insurance plan.

But yes, Android will overtake Apple just because of the freedom. It's only doing as well as it is right now because it was first on the market and people are locked into contracts. They won't keep paying for new versions if they can get the same functionality cheaper.

Once the App store for Android builds up further, you'll see more and more people switching.

You can make Android apps using HTML5 and JavaScript - you can't do that with iPhone apps. That low barrier to entry alone (even though Apple's apps all use JavaScript heavily to function) will bring more developers on board since they don't have to buy Macs just to compile the applications for the platform.

By 2015 Android will own most of the current non smartphone market.

The market for cheap [the cheapest] phones will grab the best, low priced devices available.

Its really difficult to see any other outcome other than complete Android dominance of the mobile phone market. Think of the African/Asian market alone.

The demand for smartphones in these regions is only beginning.

Really, which would you buy for the same price, a Symbian or an Android device?

Android is an operating system, mostly used on mobile phones.

Droid is a series of phones available from Verizon Wireless.

While all of the “Droid” phones run the Android OS, not all Android phones are “Droids”. ;)

The Droid's can do so much more than iPhone. A key factor is the iPhone will be available on the Verizon network beginning in January 2011.

As long as Googel is the dominant search company, they will become bigger and better. They bought the #1 online gaming company and continue to buy companies that fit into the mobile market.

Steve Jobs isn't a fool - so I'm sure we will see a few quivers from his bow & arrow too.

I went from windows mobile to iphone back to windows mobile and to android

I can tell you android is a lot better than iphone. Everyone around here speaks highly of droid. I can see it taking over for sure. I think winmo >>>> iphone too. But it didn't catch on well enough.

got the google g1 phone with the first android version for 18 months now , solid phone hasnt broke once.

I hated my android phone, total piece of shit. When a company like HTC, or Motorola can build hardware like Apple does I might switch again. I think the lack of oversight in Google's "app store" is going to cause a ton of problems. They have already found trojans, viruses, and more that steal your info in the background and send it off. So who's making Antivirus for your Google phone?
