Let me give you a quick synopsis:

I started messing with affiliate marketing last August ('07) and within two months I was making nice change hitting the niche I was hitting...what happens next...my 1 page LP gets slapped by you know who and I went from $400/ day to $0/ day!!!

Now, we are in Feb of '08 and I still haven't found something that's even remotely profitable for me (using multiple page sites). What sux is I was thinking about doing this full time after making that money within 2 months, but have had to keep my day job while I test different things. I don't want to give up because of the potential and what I did at the very beginning. I know how much money there is to me made with it...I'm willing to put in the work, just sux the work isn't producing...or hasn't produced in the last 4 months.

I currently live in SF and haven't been to a aff marketing conference before...I'm wondering if attending Ad-Tech in the City might help, but i know that can only do so much...

What do you guys think?

Well if its close by and you have time I don't really see a downside of going unless you have to pay a huge entry fee or something like that. But I don't think that you would learn anything there that you can't learn by doing research and actual experiments.

Justin, stop spamming your fucking affiliate links, it's getting annoying. Half of your posts is just you pimping out your sig.

Agreed. And how is his sig even applicable to this post?

Everything I've seen jelf write is either "lol" or "see sigg". Annoying.

These conventions are great places to find people to do business with. But you already need to be driving traffic and have a track record. Someone comes up to me and says "Yeah, you see, I am kind of, you know, trying to do this affiliate marketing thingy..." I am totally on to the next person.

The other alternative is falling for the Miva's booth line about how awesome and cheap their traffic is and that they work with 1 fortune 500 company and that you should really try them, please. If you dont already have a business model and some clue about where you want to go next, this is probably a really bad conference for you because you will end up chasing ghosts.

Get an exhibit hall pass for free and look around, but the SF adtech especially is a lot of brand new start-ups that may or may not be great - seems like every year there is a new flavor of the month - 2 years ago it was Pay Per Call - last year it was Ad Networks - this year it will probably be Facebook Widget Ads or something equally as crazy.

Just dont expect to find your million dollar idea here unless you already have a $10,000 idea being executed.

Anything you can get at the show you can find on here. However if you're looking for some way to make you believe there really is a TON of money in this industry it's a great place to find social proof. Exhibit hall pass is free so honestly you have nothing to lose. Plus I'll probably be there. But seriously as diorex said you're not going to find anything earth shattering. If you already have traffic and want to make deals it's a great place for that. It's always better to get face to face with people so you can strong arm them :P

Without speaking about Miva but just in general business this is one of the sharpest things I have seen said about conferences. I've tested at least a hundred media outlets, engines and networks online and I can say that what you try online has to really stick with you in your mind when you go to events. Case in point is Diorex's Miva comment. They sucked MAJOR balls for me. sure some people might make bank with them but I tracked so much fraud that I was repayed nearly 3/4 of what I spent. I was still in the red on the legit traffic. Now go to an event and prepared to have your peter pulled out and waxed about how great they are.

Your best bet is to give them the one night stand routine. Let em wax it once and if you dont like it then you know not to ever mess with them again.

Nice to see a refreshing and realistic response to this. Most people tell you how awesome a conference is. Yea, they can be awesome and most likely you will have pleasant experiences and may even hook up with some new business associates but then again you have to watch out for the bullshit.

Im pretty much in the same position. Went from $500 a day to $50 and that's not sustainable.

Bunch of cheerleaders in a fancy building my view of exhibits.... I agree with the scenario if you know what your doing, and can do the leg work that you can find more money in these type of forums and by networking with others you build rapport with over time. Bottom line business is business and it doesnt come easy. Going to some hall full of pretty son of bitches aint going to help you succeed right away. The work has to be done online........
